Southern California - Tour de Poway prep ride -- Sept 10

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I only do hill repeats when I can get to the top, fly down to the bottom and then get to the top again all within the time that it takes everyone else to get to the top the first time... (reminds me of that song Helter Skelter by The Beatles, U2, and Motley Crue)
or if Ralph decides that he wants to take a different direction than the rest of the group :D and I have to go look for him... :roflmao:
Hey, you guys ditched me, and then I had to do Newport Coast an extra time looking for you all!!! Also I'm dead after todays Amtrak Century, if I can swing it maybe I'll see you for lunch.

I'm hoping to see everyone... I'll be either at the top or bottom of Newport Coast, in a stars and stripes cannondale jersey, or I won't be there at all (still in negotiation). Either way, don't wait.
Cheers.

...If you weren't born here, they hand that right out when you get your new driver's license.
It's true! :D
I went for a group ride yesterday; all is ok until getting chills while resting at the top of Torrey Pines. This is going to be me first winter season, so now I'm rushing to buy an arm warmer, and perhaps a light cycling jacket.
I'll be there.
Awesome. See you soon. I'm leaving in a few minutes to go pick up Dave.

We waited until 8:05 for any late comers.
sorry I did not make it out there, stayed asleep and it felt so good to wake up at 10:30...
I rode with myself this morning... but I hope you had a good ride :)

It was awesome meeting everyone today! Everyone was super cool, and I am really looking forward to riding with all of you soon :)
BTW, how awesome was it when that guy showed up with the Gretzky (Kings) jersey? I think I need to have a custom #99 cycling jersey made :D
It was nice to see everyone today and meet some new faces! I wasn't just being dramatic about not being able to ride...I'm really sad! Okay...maybe a little bit of my inner drama queen http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/drama.gif came out toward the end, but I really did get bummed as I was driving down PCH today and seeing all of the cyclists. That should be me out there damn it! Then to see all of my random internet people...errr...I mean...friends...well that sealed the deal. I know that I just need to suck it up for the next four weeks and I'll be back in the saddle. In the words of the governator...I'll be back. :D

No one had a camera!! Can you believe it?!?!?!
I had a few of the group grumbling my name as they rode up to Starbucks. Apparently, I was the one being blamed for the Vista Ridge (?) climb off of Newport Coast and I wasn't even there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/ptbryant/laughinghard-1.gif
I had a great time. It was a fun ride with great people present, and some great visitors at our Huntington Beach rest point. A fun little metric century. :) Oh, and thanks to Josh, I know which pump to buy now.

Brandy and I were thinking that you look very familiar. Have you been in HB since childhood? http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/images/smilies/new6-05/sherlock.gif

I PM'ed him about the same thing Tiff. So Greg...we'd like a fully detailed list of your whereabouts over the last couple of decades. :D :p
All right, I'll go ahead and be the first to do a brief report. Everyone one got there as planned around 7:30. We started out by waiting for Extort up to about 10:30... (just kitting, up to about 8:10). We first rode out to Newport Coast drive and Vista ridge. The legs were still stiff but we all sucked Jason's wheel and made an easy climb (especially Voltman who was so fast that we did not even see him pass us on Vista Ridge... (right Voltman?). We then went down to take PCH down to Huntinton Beach were we had a very short break (it seemed to me like 5 or 10 minutes..) and met with Sugar Shorts (I mean Brandy) , Tiff and Gretzky (nice to meet you guys!) at the Starbucks. After reaching Long Beach we headed back the other way and returned to Newport Beach. To prolong the suffering we went around Newport Coast Drive another time before heading back to the Park (we also took an additional short brake near the top of Newport Coast drive, thanks to Dave!). Then, after a short session of comparing each others' water bottle size (!!) we had a superb lunch at the Mall on Bison. We earned that lunch all right with our 100 km ride! I had a great time with all the group and just wish I could stay longer in town to do a few more rides with you guys!
Maybe something next week?
Another group ride next Sunday would be great for me. Or perhaps instead of a training ride in the OC, what about some fun intensive hill training on Palomar? :D I envision faster riders could go at it, aiming for climb times well under two hours on South Grade. (Or we could take it easier and use East Grade as our climbing route.) And then turn around and pace up the slower riders. And then we could all rest at the top a bit before making a trip to the observatory.
Don't let NDG fool you about my climbing. He, blastingbob, and 1265 Lombardi (and I think Grumpy Pig too... don't remember for sure) were setting a fast pace up Ridge Park Rd and I did my best to keep up for as long as I could. Then when the grade pitched up some more, I quickly reached sub-barf pace, so rather than risk having mateo44 accidentally pass me on the wrong (ie not right) side at an inopportune time, I backed off and watched them continue to sail up the hill without me.

Yeah, it was a great ride! Perfect weather. Great pace. Food. Great group of peeps. Great meeting Gretzky at Starbucks, and great to see Brandy and tiff.
We may be game for next weekend, Jason.
Oh and I hereby declare that from here on out a camera MUST be present pre- during and post-ride!!! :p
My fault, I brought a camera but forgot it in my truck. When we got to the top of the first climb, I thought, "Hey, I should take a picture of the view..."
Had a great time today. Thanks everyone.

I'm good next weekend as well. As for Palomar; don't know... :)
Yeah, I had a great time. It was nice seeing you all again!
I would be happy to do Palomar if any of you guys from Irvine go and provide me a lift!:D
It would be fun to be able to visit the observatory by the same occasion. Is that possible?

Well I've never been in to Starbucks or Trader Joes until today! Voltman bought me my first ever frappuccino (I had to look that up) and it was daggum yummy! I am not a coffee drinker but I think I am sold on that one. I wish we had a camera when DaveSANYYZ and Voltman was bumping their hips. It was a Kodak moment!:D
Sorry I couldnt stay for lunch but I was late to go to friends house and watch the Packers get spanked by the stinking Bears..... 0-26..... at 1265 Lombardi (Lambeau Field)! It really chaps my ass.
It was another great ride and I couldnt've asked for a better weather! It was nice to meet and ride with all of you, Matt, Melissa, Voltaire, Jason, BOB, Frank, Dave and dammit I forgot your name NDG( hopefully we'll get to ride again before you head up to... what is that piece of land up there?:) ). I hope I didnt miss anybody. I think I am beginning to get either peoples real names, or their forum names down.
Next weekend I wont be around because I am planning to pass out doing this : http://mountcharlestonhillclimb.com/eventinfo.html Any of you SoCal mountain goats up for a 17 mile climb? http://www.teamcarina.com/images/Mt%20Charleston%20Hill%20Climb%20Time%20Trial.pdf

Yeah... I managed to back off before reaching barf pace, so all is well. Thanks for caring. :)
Wow...what a day. :D It was great riding with the guys. I appreciate you letting me hang with you. I am sorry if I was a bit slow at points!:(
Thanks Jason for all of your tips and alleviating my worry about Poway. Thanks to Dave for talking to me at points in the ride. I enjoyed our chats. Louis, I loved hearing about Montreal and learning about traveling with your bike (Matt and I will take our bikes next time we head to Montreal and hopefully Europe if we go! :o ).
I am sorry I didn't get to talk with all of you. Lunch was great. And we do need to make sure someone has a camera next time. I think we have grown too accustom to Chimivee, Extort and Fixer taking the photos for us.
Anyway, we just had dinner (Matt was able to wait...I guess the pasta was enough after all:rolleyes: ). We had pizza for dinner!!! Yum.
Thanks to Jason, Frank, Dave and Louis for doing Newport Coast with me on the way home (even when you had the opportunity to head to the car early) and Dave, your flat tire provided a much need break ....so thanks! :) (and I am glad your tire is ok)
Jason, I would love to do Palomar next week, but I am not sure if I am strong enough. However, I am definitely up for a ride next weekend.
Anyway, thanks again for a great day. I look forward to seeing you guys soon (hopefully next weekend).
Melissa
P.S. Great to see Tiff, Brandy and Gretzky...thanks for coming out to see us! You guys are the best. :p

Well, I missed it. Sounds like fun, too. I would be up for next Sunday - preferably in OC for me, as I travel to Europe on Monday and can't be gone all day. Let me know if anything comes up.

Melissa, the baby shower was a typical, game playing, fru-fru, all around girly affair. I would've much rather been on the ride with you guys. It was nice to see our friend though. She looked very cute. :)
Melissa, I keep forgetting to get back to you on this...
I believe you would make it up Palomar. East Grade is a bit easier. Slightly steeper max grades, but nothing you can't handle--certainly nothing approaching the grades on Ridge Park--and it's much gentler overall, with some flat sections. You could handle South Grade too. It's almost like climbing Newport Coast six times in a row without a break. You just have to settle into a tempo rhythm and go at it.
That said, at least at this point, I don't think I'll be organizing a ride for this coming weekend. I get a feeling that I might be a bit occupied. But if plans change soon, I might try to organize something.

No problem, Jason. And no problem about keeping an eye on you -- we're happy to ride with you at whatever pace (that is, whatever pace we're capable of sustaining).
On Sunday, Melissa will probably do a sorta-early (7:30am) OC ride. With the academic quarter starting soon, we both need to get home and get a solid half-day of work in on Sunday. The ride will surely be some Newport Coast/PCH combination again. If anyone's interested in coming along, or meeting along the way, just let me know...
