Getting ready for the Poway Century? Just looking for a fun Sunday morning ride? Here's your chance.

This will be a social, NO DROP ride. Around 50-65 miles. Some climbing.

When? Sunday, September 10. Meet at 7:30am, ready to roll at 8:00am sharp.

Where: Bonita Creek Park in Newport Beach (University and La Vida off of Jamboree). This is the same starting point as the Santiago Canyon Ride (July 30th).

Map here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=213322).

Route: We'll start by going up Newport Coast from Vista Bonita toward PCH. Then steep Vista Ridge loop which connects back to Newport Coast. Then Newport Coast to PCH, heading North on PCH for water/coffee/snack break in Huntington Beach. Continue North on PCH as far as group decides, perhaps to Long Beach. Return on PCH to Newport Coast for another climb. Can repeat Newport Coast climb as group sees fit.

UPDATE: We'll be stopping at Starbucks in Huntington Beach (on Main street, a few blocks up from PCH) between 9:30 and 10:00am. Just in case anyone wants to grab a coffee with us, or join us for some or all of what's left of the ride...

Post-ride lunch, of course.

All are welcome! Just post to the thread if you're coming, so we'll know to look out for you.

UPDATE: Here's my attempt to map this route. I did it as an out-and-back, turning around at PCH and Warner in Huntington Beach (we could go further North if the group decides). It's 51.4 miles as mapped below:

No early morning climb of Vista Ridge (or the nastier other side, whatever that road is called) to simulate having to climb Poway Grade early in the day with a lot of mileage left to go? :p

I'll be there.

Oh yeah, I left that out by accident. Good idea. Consider it added (I'll edit now).

It's called Ridge Park Rd.

I'll be doing the Amtrak Century the day before, so I'll see how I feel. Maybe if Jason will PM me his cell phone number I might meet you along the way.

I'll be doing the Pacific Coast Tri that morning. My wave goes off at 7:54 so depending on how long it takes you guys to get to PCH, maybe you'll see me :)

Have a great ride!!!

Sorry...Not gonna make it. I might do the Poway metric loop, though. As training, of course (and to set booby-traps)

You're going to hide strippers along the course?

Clearly you've never been to Ramona.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing the other day. No, haven't heard a peep.

A strange request, I admit, but...

Everyone who ends up driving to the start, would you please bring along your floor pump for me to try out? If you have multiple floor pumps, would you please bring all non-identical ones along?

This ride needs to be renamed Tour de Floor Pump.

Jason, I have a Performance brand one. Can't remember which one though. I'll be glad to bring it if you'd like.

jschen
09-07-06, 02:49 PM
Please do. I'm trying to figure out which floor pump to get because--oh dear, this is so embarassing, but someone's bound to mention it anyway, so I might as well say--I can't use my current floor pump with my new wheels and short stemmed tubes. Yeah, I can use longer stemmed tubes, but it looks so nice with the short stems. In the interim, I'm pumping up the tubes with my Topeak Road Morph.

Jason, I'll sell you my brand new Performance Hurricane floor pump for $5. It'll save me the trip back for a refund. My 20 year old cast iron presta only pump works too good compared to this....:D

jschen
09-07-06, 02:56 PM
But will it pump a tube with a stem extending only a few millimeters past the rim? It's awfully tight clearance even for my frame pumps. I guess for $5, though, I'd be happy to try it out. If it doesn't fix my problem, I can always give it to my coworker who plans to buy a bike soon.

Why don't you just get valve extenders?

jschen
09-07-06, 03:12 PM
I tried that last night. My pump won't work with the valve extender, either. Any of my three frame pumps will work with the extender. Not that that does me any good seeing as any of them would also work without the valve extender.

I'm very much looking forward to this ride. I haven't been riding much this week, so all the more reason to look forward to this one. Maybe with fresh legs, I can keep up with Extort up Ridge Park Rd. (Okay, maybe not.)

Maybe if Jason will PM me his cell phone number I might meet you along the way.

Done.

I'd love to join you guys...I'm trying to decide if it would make me more sad about not riding. I went upstairs and sat on my bike tonight. It misses me. I can tell. :(

Or, it could just make you more excited about starting up again, which will come relatively soon!

Come for lunch! You gotta eat anyways....

I haven't had any issues with valve extenders. You did use teflon tape to put them on, and unscrewed/opened the presta valve right? :)

jschen
09-07-06, 09:34 PM
The valve definitely was open. Teflon tape. Hmm... no, didn't use that. I'll take some from the lab supply and try again. Applied between the valve and the extender or to seal up the connection between the valve and the extender after the extender's already on?

roadfix
09-07-06, 09:40 PM
Yes, teflon tape definitely helps. When I had my Campy Shamals several years back I remember pushing the presta valve through the extender with a thin wooden dowel each time I was about to pump the tire, otherwise the valve would sometimes stick and would not allow any incoming air.

voltman
09-07-06, 09:42 PM
I'd say Todai, but they'll probably be closed when we finish.

jschen
09-07-06, 09:47 PM
Thinking it over, it appears the I should be placing teflon on after putting on the extender. It's not a matter of the valve getting stuck. I can pump low pressure air through with my frame pumps. (Tested it out on a spare tube that wasn't on a rim.) But not at all with my floor pump. Maybe it's because of a leak, and then the pump just also dumping air through the Shrader attachment since it's auto-sensing and can't sense which side has a tube if both sides leak air. We'll see.

I need a floor pump too. I guess I'll just benefit from Jason's research by finding out which one he settles on and buying that one :D

Or, if I end up getting a new floor pump to get around needing a valve extender, you can benefit from my research by buying my other pump for a song. Or there's the one Fixer is offering to sell me for $5. If it doesn't suit my needs, you could buy it.

Jason, then it sounds more like a pump head issue than anything else. These new all-in-one pump heads are crap (reason for returning my new Hurricane pump). The ones I've seen and used that work very well, besides the dedicated presta heads, are the dual heads.....presta on one side and schrader on the other.

Sounds fun. I suggest you go early. And if you really hate the heat, perhaps just climb Mt Baldy Rd from Claremont instead. I went up Mt Baldy Rd on Monday (roughly 6:30-8:30) and was never in the sun until during the descent. The headwinds tend to be more annoying in the early morning, but on the other hand, the temperatures were perfect.

That's what I'm thinking. But the other thing is that a pump head that requires minimal valve length would be nice too since it would be nice to not have to put on valve extenders every time I have to pump air.
