Southern California - Yeah, this should be in Advocacy and Safety...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

and it already is....

But this needs to get out to every So Cal resident quickly.

  Dana Point has decided that PCH from south Dana Point (Doheny State Beach at Palisades Drive) to San Clemente should be off limits to cyclists. They are planning on building an adjacent walkway/bike path and everyone would have to use that... :fight:

This stretch of road is AWESOME for catching a nice breeze and screaming down the road at 30MPH in a paceline and I really do not want to sit on a path with surfers carrying their boards and mothers pushing strollers for a long distance. Help to spread the word to all your cycling friends and send in letters to the city council and mayor.

Thanks!

(P.S. I am a LCI (league certified instructor) through the League of American Bicyclists  , and the Chairman of the Safety Sub-Committee   for the MS150 Bay to Bay bike tour (which sounds really scary coming from me), so I have to pay attention to this stuff. You can even listen to me talking about safety in a podcast here (http://www.kintera.org/htmlcontent.asp?cid=61659). )

Thousand Oaks had this issue in the late 80’s. There were some stretches where it was required to ride on the sidewalk as there was not adequate room on the street for bike lanes. The rumor is someone that got a ticket challenged it and won. I got out of bicycling for about 12 years so really didn’t follow it. I do know now that Thousand Oaks “permits” bicycling on the sidewalk so they obviously recanted.

Anyway, this is all hearsay; I do know that the signs used to say “bicyclists must ride on sidewalk” and now say “bicyclists may ride on sidewalk”. What I don’t know is why Thousand Oaks changed their tune.

Thousand Oaks changed their tune because the State of California regulates who can and cannot use public roadways. Cities and counties can only regulate who can use the shoulder of a roadway...

at least that is what the actual law states...

Extort, you are our local bike advocate. That's great!

If all else fails, and a path ends up being built, it would be much better to have a bike path along with a walkway, instead of 1 multi-use path.

I thought cyclists had the option to use a shoulder. I didn't realize cities and counties could regulate them. Do you have a Vehicle Code section that states this?

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21650.htm

21650 (g) This section does not prohibit the operation of bicycles on any shoulder of a highway, where the operation is not otherwise prohibited by this code or local ordinance.

This is just going to make it more dangerous for cyclist, peds and surfers!!

Scary does not seem to cover the emotion very well.... I would have thought that people would be terrified to follow me, let alone listen to me and do what I tell them to do.

This option does make it safer for one group.... motorists.

As for the bike path, I do understand that sometimes cars and bicycles need to be seperated, but I think that a different approach is best in this case. There is a post (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=226363) about the DOT placing a partial barrier on the road to keep cars in their own lane, couldn't something like that be used to seperate the shoulder/bike lane from the motor vehicle section? What about just putting up signs informing motorists that bicycles have equal rights to the roads? Couldn't the DMV start a program to teach drivers about bicyclists and make it mandatory for people to take the class every several years?

My wife needs that class....she is always complaining about bikes on her way to work and back..I keep telling her they have the right to be there..and it could be me on the bike....

Doesn't work. There's a sign on my way to work where the shoulder ends and it's a nice climb. I'm usually doing 10mph give or take. It's the "Share the road" sign with a bicycle, and right below that is a 25mph speed limit sign. I've been honked at a few times, about 100 yards up is one of those radar speed signs, last guy that honked at me gave me maybe 2 feet of room and tripped that thing at 38mph. Time for handlebar mounted rocket launchers, in carbon and Ti so they don't add significant weight. :)

That's a great idea! If you launch a rocket without unlatching it first, it could give you quite a speed boost. :)

Apparently this has been resolved, and favorably for bicyclists!!

Bicyclists are able to use the road and the city is working on improving the signage so that motorists can expect to see cyclists in the roadway, or on the shoulder, or in the bike path.

The presentation contained a video showing two cyclists and one decides to pass the other only to find another cyclist coming quickly in the opposite direction. The two cyclists were closing at about 50 MPH and I am hoping that the 'Oh S***!' look on the other guys face comes out on camera! He was looking at his computer while we were filming and he looked up in time to see me about 30 feet away before I ducked back into my paceline. Hopefully it looks like this

The video: MadMike is in front and I am setting up to pass him when Helmet Head appears from the other direction.
