I'm looking into buying a trainer and would appreciate any advice given. I've new to riding, and being a student I have limited funds.

Thanks in advance, Portent

A wind trainer is the least expensive way to go and very natural to road resistance. They can be very loud so not recommended if you live in an apartment building or share housing with people unless you have a basement or something you can use. A slick tire will help immensley though.

Magnetic trainers are in the middle using magnets to increase resistance. Very quiet although some do not like them saying they do not simulate the road as well.

Fluid trainers are the top dog. They are much quieter than wind much like the mag ones. They are like the wind in that they creat a more road like resistance. They can be very expensive and some units have had trouble with the fluid leaking.

I use a wind trainer and now use it with a slick. I turn on the stereo and am able to listen to the TV that way. I live alone so I dont bother anyone.

If you do a search through this forum you'll find there were lots of posts earlier in the season (fall '02-winter '03) about several different models and brands.

I bought the least expensive fluid trainer from Performance Bike and it has been fine. Have put about 2,000 miles on it over two winters. Still runs fine. There are always a bunch on eBay and spring/summer is the for good deals on trainers as people clean out the things they bought but don't use. Fluid is the smoothest operating with low noise. Helps keep me sane (and under 200 pounds) in the winter.

Thanks for all info, appreciated. I think I'll take your advice ParamountScapin and wait for the summer, since by the sound of things a wind trainer is too noisy, a magnetic not like the road, and a fluid expensive, but hopefully not in the summer.

Cheers, Portent.

RonH, you're right I should've done a search first. My apologies.
