I've been having problems with my toes going numb on rides over 2 hrs. and have decided to get a new pair of Sidi Genius Mega Cycling Shoes (which have a bigger toe box). I have been using a pair of Time shoes with ATAC Alum pedals that I had before I got my '06 Lemond.

So, with the new [road] shoes I'm going to get some lighter, and probably road specific pedals. I'm looking at the following possible pedals:

Time RXS Carbon (260 gr. + 82 gr. for cleats and screws = 342 gr.)
Speedplay Zero's stainless (206 gr. + 115 gr. = 321 gr.)
Crank Brs. Candy SL (294 gr. + 67 gr. = 361 gr.)
Crank Brs. Eggbeaters (266 gr. + 67 gr. = 333 gr.) [ATB, may need an adapter]
Look Keo Carbon CrMo ( 230 gr. + 69 gr. = 299 gr.)

I have had some knee issues in the past so I would like at least 5d of float. I will be walking around a bit but most rides involve less than 25m of walking, some club events, i.e. century rides maybe a bit more. Occasionally I take a trail off the highway down to my subdivision so then I am walking about 50m on a steep dirt path. I typically ride about 2,500 to 4,000 km a year (not inc. commuting). No racing. I'm 160 lbs.

I'm leaning toward the keo's, but the Time's sound good too. Maintaining cleats on the Speedplays sound like they are more bother than they are worth.

Any suggestions?

I have the KEOs.. replaced my Speedplays with them. Best thing I ever did.

Get cleat covers for whatever pedal you end up with tho, especially the KEOs

If you have knee issues you may want to look into the Speedplay Frogs.

I have been using Speedplay X5's for almost 2 years and I've never had foot pain.

When I had tendonitis in my knees and was racing, my Look pedals worked just fine. I had received suggestions to try the Speedplays as well, just never bothered since the Looks were working (and Speedplays were really expensive back then).

You should add the Shimano SPD-SL line to your list of possibles. The Ultegras are great pedals and the cleat is quite stable if you need to walk more than a foot or two.

I have the Eggbeaters and Candys from Crankbrothers. Great pedals, but you need to get the road cleat with "pontoons" aftermarket to use them effectively with a road shoe.

I've got a pair of Ritchey Pro Peloton pedals on the way right now. I haven't seen many reviews of them, but will let you know once I get a chance to ride them...

Anyone else use them?

Can't go wrong, but heck, go for the Look Keo Carbon. But, heck, the prices are so low at Probikekit, that you might as well go for the 190 gram Titanium axle.

egg beaters SL's for $42 if you use google checkout it takes another $10 off so it covers the cost of shipping.

p.s. the adapters for my road shoes were $17 at my LBS...

I love my keo's and the prices at ProBikeKit are hard to beat! Good customer service too.

I'm in a very similar boat to you. Tried on the Mega's at my LBS yest, didnt have my size. Getting them at MEC tonight, but they're 250CAD there. If you order through probikefit, I assume you're going to get nabbed for customs and duty fees. Any idea what they will charge you? thx.

Unless you are lucky and they sail right past Canadian Customs, you will pay $5 processing fee (this may have gone up), 6% GST, 7% PST in BC, plus I think there are some pretty stiff duties on footware. You can probably get this info from the Canada Customs Website.

+1 for the Keo Carbons. If you go for these pedals you will probably want to get the Red cleats as they have more float than the Grey or Black cleats (which have no float). You can regularly pick them up on eBay for +- $140. I have also tried Shimano SPD and SPD-L pedals and favor the Look Keo Carbon pedals by far. You will want to get the cleat covers though, walking on the Keo cleats without covers will wear them quickly (and you might not feel very stable walking on the cleats by themselves). That is one area where the SPD-L pedals are better - the cleats are much better to walk in - but then again, you're buying them to ride....

Go with the Times. They have lateral as well as rotational float. They also have a very low stack height (not sure if that's a big plus), large interface area and cleats you can walk in without wearing out the mating area. I've had a lot of knee problems over the years and have found them excellent. They are a little harder to get into than Looks but otherwise (IMHO) better in all respects.

I can vouch for the Keo Carbons. I recently got them as my first set of clipless pedals. My LBS suggested any of the Keo pedals as my first clipless pedal since they are pretty easy to clip in and out of. I can say that they were definitely right! I can't offer any comparisons, but my Keo Carbons have been great so far.

If you go with the Looks, get the cleat covers...they make walking easier.

Because it's "clothing", it's going to get pwned in the face with customs and tax. As one of our members have recently found out.

If you order, other stuff, worse that can happen is tax + $5. But shoes/jerseys/clothing = no.

+1 on the Ultegra SPD-SL pedals. Very stable platform and easily walkable cleat. I had hotspots at one point, especially in my right foot, but some Dr. Scholes gel insoles did the trick.
