I really want to, but a family obligation prevents it. Darn! It looks like a great first-time century.

I am registered, but the weather does not look promising. If I ride, I will be doing the 50 mile route. If they are the same route to start off, I would be happy to meet up with you.

Let me know when and where you want to meet. I suppose I could go buy some rain gear. I went to a massage therapist today for me knee. I'll be interested to see how it does on Sunday.

I didn't even think about the weather. I still want to do 100, but if it doesn't look good and I am already there then I could probably be talked into a 50.

Let's tentativly make plans to meet up (weather pending).

"massage therapist"...yeah....right....:p . Whatever you want to call it as long as you were "happy" in the end.;) ;)

Hey Psimet2001, is this going to be another attempt at two back-to-back centuries?? Man you are just begging for some pain :) !

Also, I like your official title, "BFNIC Grand Poop-Ahh," but I must have missed the Poll. I call, "BFNIC First Luetenit Lackey." Later.

I think he was shooting for 6 centuries in 6 weeks. Don't you have that hilly Indiana ride coming up in a while also? Fearless leader :D

*evil grin* - I'll let you all know when everything is done.... I will be a little shy of my goal (the pre-ride only went 70 miles), but I do have a very "Hilly" ride in Bllomington in October....:D

Yeah this will be another round of back-to-back centuries. I did the Oswego one before the Cream City one in August.

As for the Poop-Ahh ...it was based on your suggestion. You can have whatever position you would like :D

Looks like it is going to be pretty chilly in the morning, but I think I'd rather start earlier rather than later as well.

You want to meet up around 7:00 or 7:30? Let me know what works for you. I've got an hour drive as well.

Let's try for 7:00. I'll leave the house at 5:30. Travel software is saying 1 hr, but I know it will be more like 1.5 hours. *parying for good weather* See you there!

This has got to be a wet ride!!!
Hopefully it was a little dryer up in Wis than here in Il today. Raining all morning. Had to switch from a 50 mile bike ride to a 5 mile run.

Well it wasn't much drier up north. psimet2001 made the smart decision and stayed home in bed. I on the other hand, decided to brave the elements and did the 55 mile route.

It was wet, it was cold and it was windy (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ;) ) Not a great time or avg. speed, but my knees seemed to hold up pretty well, despite the cold.

Here are the details:

Dist.: 56.62 Miles
Avg. Speed: 15.4 MPH
Top Speed: 30.0 MPH
Total Time: 3:41:13
Avg. Pace: 3:54/Mile
Elevation Gain: 1,719 Feet
Avg. Heart Rate: 144 bpm

I'll try and post a more detailed ride report later. Two interesting events, one involved a dog and one involved a motorcycle.

Did you guys ride the Harmon?

Rain and cool weather equaled a very tough Muddy Buddy for the 1000 teams participating this morning out in Gilberts. Mud clogging up the derailleurs front and back. Mud making the bike drift from side to side. Mud building up between the fork and front tire eventually grinding things to a halt. Mud for the running sections. And of course mud in the ending Mud Pit. It was GREAT!

Oh, and of course the complimentary Red Hook ESB after the race. Nothing says Sunday morning like getting slathered in mud and then drinking good beer in the rain while yelling at others still finishing through the Pit.

I give you a lot of credit for riding in this stuff. Maybe that knee will hold up for the full ride next week.

Do you use your Garmin Edge 305 when running? I was just wondering how one would carry it? No ride for me today either. Put in 3 miles on the treadmill. Stupid rain. Later.

Yeah I woke at 5:00 and heard the rain in my gutters. Went to the computer and looked at the radar for Wilmont and decided it was going to be a long wet day. That was it for me. I sent a PM and went back to bed.

Been catching up on chores around the house. Hope to have the BFNIC ride info posted later today. Maybe I'll get a couple miles on the treadmill or trainer.

Well I woke at 3:00 AM to the sound of rain coming through the open windows. The rain increased and around 4:15 I decided to get out of bed and check the radar. It didn't look good so I checked some other sites to see if their radars painted a different picture. Nope. It was either go back to bed or get out their and ride in the cold rain. Given I haven't put too many miles on the bike in the past three weeks, I decided to head out to meet psimet2001.

Got the car loaded up and made the hour drive to Wilmot, WI hoping it would be dry when I got there. It was not. It was about 58 degrees and raining. I called Psimet2001 to see if he was going to make it and got the news that he saw the radar and stayed home. In future, when the experienced rider stays home, that is a good sign to avoid the rain.

I signed in and got the route sheets. I picked up the 55 mile route which is what I wanted to do and grabbed a 25 mile sheet in case the weather made me whimp out. I have no rain gear for the bike so I headed out in shorts, knee warmers, a jersey and a Performance thicker long sleeved jersey/jacket that zips all the way down and seems to suck up the water. It was 7:01 and I was on the bike.

It was fairly wet and cold the first 10 miles or so and than the rain started to let up. I think the weather kept most people home as I was on the road alone for most of the ride. All distances shared the same route into the first rest stop at about mile 16. The course shared some of the same roads as the Lake County Ramble from earlier in the year.

I felt pretty good at the first rest stop and decided to head out and finish my 55 miles. Out of the first rest stop it had stopped raining but seemed to be getting colder and definitely windier. Shortly after the first stop, there were a couple of riders about 50 - 100 feet ahead of me. Soon it was time for our first encounter with a dog. The dog ran after the lead riders and fortunately did not know that I was there yet. The pace picked up and the riders broke away. As the dog was standing in the middle of the road he turned for home and noticed me. Luckily I had anticipated this and was already sprinting and hoping to make a clean escape. The dog made a half hearted attempt to come after me and stopped to turn home just as I crested a small roller. As I came down the roller a car passed me in the opposite direction. Knowing that the dog was probably still in the middle of the road I expected the worst. I looked back to see the car go over the hill and slam on the brakes. This was followed by a thud and the car ending up in the gravel and a ditch on the side of the road. I did not stick around to see what happened, but I would expect it did not turn out well for the dog.

In the area around my house, I do not run into loose dogs. Today however, I ran into 4 or 5 loose dogs and it was not always a pleasant experience.

The second rest stop was at mile 35 and it was a challenge getting there. The wind was directly in my face for an excessively long time. I had set up my Garmin to show only current speed, heart rate and cadence on the main screen. I knew with the weather that this ride was going to be a struggle and I did not want to be looking at my average speed and distance all day long.

After finally getting to the last rest stop I got some food and downed some watered down gatorade. Out of the rest stop the wind was at my back and it was nice to carry a decent speed for a while. About mile 40 the rain started again and this time it was accompanied by the strong wind. While riding down one stretch of road I heard a vehicle behind me. As it approached I could tell it was a mot0orcycle and it pulled up along side me and just sat there. I looked over and the rider smiled and said "Are you feeling fantastic?" I was a bit stunned but managed to say "Uh, no actually, this ride is not very fun" The motorcycle just sat next to me and than he said "you want to hold on for awhile?" Hold on? Wow, a free ride for who knows how long! Wet pavement, frozen hands and some unknown motorcyclist who is going to accelerate to 60MPH with me hanging on. "Uh, no thanks, I'm good" He stayed next to me for a couple minutes and than took off with two more cyclists who came up from behind me. I can honestly say this has never happened to me before. I can also honestly say that I am way to neurotic to ever take anybody up on an offer like that.

The last 15 miles of the ride got colder and wetter. The routes in the area were very nice with some nice rollers and some unfortunate scents of manure. If the weather and the turn out had been better for this ride, it really would have been great.

I rolled back into Wilmot High School, grabbed a towel and headed for the hot showers. My cycling clothes and shoes were just absolutely soaked. I was a bit concerned about the Garmin in the rain, but it seemed to hold up fine. I'll know for sure next time I go to turn it on. I had thought I read something about the Garmin being "water resistant", so hopefully I wont have any problems.

I do know that it is going to be very difficult to add 45 miles to this distance next week at the North Shore Century, so we will have to wait and see what I decide to do there.

No, a minimum of the metric century. That would only be about 5 miles more than today and hopefully in better weather conditions.

I really want to do the full century though. I'm getting kind of tired of listening to my brother talk about all the century rides he does in Northern California. :D

If the wind is not too bad and the temp is okay then you will not find an easier century. Besides you will not get to ride around the Kenosha Bike track if you are not doing the century. Take care of that knee.
