General Cycling Discussion - Cyclist struck by marsupial

I suppose this could happen with any piece of flung roadkill. Anyone else had or witnessed something like this?

Well, Kangaroos can be a little psychotic out here at times, although this is the first I've heard of a dead one causing any problems. To be honest I think it's one of those "one-in-a-million" shots.

Very true- when I was living in Australia, the folks I was living with told me that kangaroos are somehow attracted to light, so at night when driving, if they get scared when you are driving and they get caught in the headlights, they'll tend to head towards the lights.... I didn't believe it until one night, I was driving with my friend from Perth to Albany, and all of a sudden, we saw a huge kangaroo jumping right in front of our car! I narrowly missed hitting the kangaroo, but I almost lost my mind right there- the road was completely deserted, and we were alone with no way to get in touch with anyone, so if we had hit the kangaroo, our little compact would have stalled on the road, and we would have to had waited until morning for traffic to resume before someone would have found us. I actually think I aged about 15 years in that one moment.

I guess you gotta be careful of kangaroos, alive or dead. You never know what's going to happen when you come across one, especially when they're projectile... ;)

Whoa, I have to admit, except for the guy getting hurt pretty bad, that is really hilarious. It kind of goes along with the recent posts about people attacking bikers, but in a more relieving sort of way. This time it's flying marsupials :p

Sounds like Roos are every bit as smart as opossums called possums. Of course, opossums are small, slow moving, dim witted and low to the grounds so one would probably never get hit by a flying one.

But we have armadillos. They are pretty neat. They are small, armor plated, dim witted, near sighted and oblivious. They tend to wander the roads at night and on a bicycle you really have to watch them.

They cause damage to cars. Motorists often make the mistake of driving over them figuring that the 'dillo will just cower as the car drives passes above it. Bad move. The 'dillo panics when the car goes over it and jumps and can do an impressive amount of damage to the underside of the car. I understant they are especially effective against oil pans.

Now that you mention it, I have had some nasal congestion lately. Maybe that explains why all my rides seem to be solo affairs. :eek:

Actually I just missed 2 kangaroos that jumped across the deserted dirt road I was on yesterday.

The worst time is during breeding season, when the large males will chase you for some distance. This happened to me when I was fishing once.

Most people avoid driving in the less densely settled areas of the country at night during summer.
