Ok, so if you ride your bike regularly in place of driving a car you might think you're doing the environment a favor. Well, according to a Wharton School professor it's time to shelve that holier-than-thou attitude.

Based upon Karl Ulrich's research (.pdf paper), biking does save a considerable amount of energy. But it also makes you healthier. Ulrich finds that a single additional year of biking adds 10.6 days to one's life, and that the energy consumed during this added lifetime offsets the energy saved by pedaling:

Hmmm...interesting. Karl Ulrich seems to be in the wrong business...he should team up with Kevorkian and rid the globe of all these "expendable" people living a longer life and comsuming all this extra energy. Okay I may be off there...but alot of these "scientists" that come up with these "studies" come off with a human race-hating attitude. (snicker) I mean come on! Is it better for us all to be sedintary couch potatoes consuming fast food and diabetic meds on a daily basis...to be sure we all take a dirt nap by the time we're 40...look at all the earths resources we'll be saving then...maybe thats the overall conspiracy the Republicans, Democrats, Stonecutters Union, and Trilateral Commision are in on.

Ya know, these so called "fuel economy" cars are no great deal either. If the manufacturers wanted to make them more environmentally friendly, they'd team up with the government to eliminate those collapsible steering columns, air bags, safety belts, safety glass, and all those impact absorbing zones. Catalytic converters and un-leaded gasoline might make them run cleaner but in the long run is that really ecologically sound? Let car makers get their money's worth out of those crash test dummies by seeing who can destroy the most the quickest. Whatever happened to Ford's Pinto?
