Hi all

I have been trying to remove the brake studs from the brake bosses on my ht frame. So far they are rounded off and i have used every kind of proper tool for the job. The first try was at the LBS where the guy there couldnt remove them and he said that maybe they are set with some kind of weldtite grease that helps them lock on the frame. However i was able to remove the studs from the fork. Any advice on how to remove them from the frame?

I am talking about the studs which are bolted on the bosses. not the bosses themselves which are welded on the seatstays.

You might want to try an adjustable wrench.

try a hair dryer(not a torch or anything extremely hot) and heating up the bosses a bit, then try and cool them down a bit... here's the thought, you heat up the metal bosses(welded ones) on the frame so they expand a little bit, then cool the studs so they contract...might help. Or just try heating and cooling the whole assembly so that it breaks the bond that is holding the studs in there. Hope you can get them out! I know I've had a few that have been a bear to get out... but with much patients and effort they eventually came loose.

Will that affect the paintjob or the integrity of the tubing?

as long as it's a hair dryer...you'll have no issues...notice I put don't use anything hotter than that! and don't blast it right at it... just do it slowly and don't put the end of the dryer right on the bike, and it'll be fine. Alot of guys use hair dryers to take of old decals/stickers...

I've done it before, with no problems!
