Southern California - Commute from Pacific Beach to La Jolla in San Diego

I have a job at the north tip of UCSD in San Diego. I was wondering if anyone here has made the commute from PB to LaJolla, and if so how long/difficult it was. Thanks in advance.

I used to live in San Diego, but didnt ride much then. But I do know the coastline, and it can't be very far! I'm guessing 6 or 7 miles each way? I'm also guessing it's really flat, making for an easy ride.

Challenge yourself and go up and over Mt. Soledad each way.

Yeah when I said "it's really flat" I guess it depends on what "it" is. I was thinking a straight shot up the coast (but not sure where Torrey Pines falls exactly)...your way looks Mo' fun! :D

Here's the route I am considering, I hear there is a coastal bike trail. I don't want to have a coronary at 27 going up soledad. I need to get in a little more shape first. This website is pretty sweet by the way. Are there anymore san diego bike forums I should look into?

Depending on what part of PB you are in, it might be quicker to head over to the Rose Canyon Bike Path then up Gilman Drive

Both Soledad Rd (from the South) and Via Capri (from the North) are two of the more challenging climbs in SD. Which is nice.

San Diego has a many valueable bicycling resources. In addition there are a couple of very useful route planning tools on the web. Here are some resources:

SANDAG Ridelink (http://www.ridelink.org/): Call them -- 1-800-COMMUTE -- and get a free San Diego County Bike Map. This map shows the official bike routes in San Diego. Also, Ridelink has a ridematch profile that includes bicycling. Signup and maybe you will find a riding partner.

TopoRoute (http://www.toporoute.com/): Very rough route mapping tool, but it has one unique feature -- Follow Roads. When you enter your route, you can select "Follow Roads", The tool will automatically calculate the route following roads.

gmap-pedometer (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/): Route mapping tool for walking and cycling. Better performance than the other two.

RouteSlip (http://www.routeslip.com/): This tool enables cyclist to map their routes and share them with others. You can look up other routes in the vicinity of your commute to get a better idea of what roads cyclists prefer. The "Discover Routes" functionality is a little crude.

Rose Canyon Trail (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=32.848672,-117.234769&spn=0.001226,0.002173&t=h&om=1): This is a Rail Trail next to an operating railway in the area.

either way its gonna be a climb and a good commute. Just pack light if you're going to challenge Soledad.

You can ride the coast north on Mission into Bird Rock, it turns into La Jolla Dr. and either make a left on (pretty sure) La Jolla Shores Dr. Go up the hill past the Scripps pier and the dorms to UCSD or go up a fairly long but gradual hill on Torrey Pines Rd. The hill is a little steep but not too bad. Same as Mt. Soledad. The southern route to Mt. Soledad is long but not real steep. The northern side, Via Capri (?) is steep but short. And the pavement sucks.

The real problem that I have in La Jolla is the traffic - the old ladies in Mercedes and the a##wipes in Land Rovers that will run you over like a mongrel dog.

I don't know if toporoute is very accurate. I was under the impression that Mission Gorge was about 7%, I know it gets steeper by the rental place, and tapers off by the driveway of the condos, but if it's 15.9% and I run about 8mph in that section I'm in better shape than I thought. :)
