Hey all, I have an old 5sp freewheel on a shimano hub and I want to upgrade it to 6, ideally 7sp. The problem is that the axel is not long enough. I got the 6sp on and it fit okay, but the smallest cog rubbed against the frame. A re-dish wouldn't work 'cause there is not enough axel left.

So my question is, is it possible to swap out the axel. The rear spacing seems like it would work if I did.

Sure! You might need to widen the spacing as well. Check Sheldon's site on doing that. Here is where you get your axle.

What do you have for axle washers and spacers on the non-drive side? The usual solution to your problem is to move a spacer over from the non-drive side of the hub and redish the wheel.

Weird old bike. No spacers on not drive side. Went to LBS and picked up a new axel and some spacers, works like a charm (so far).

Thanks for the help.
