Foo - Anyone have knee problems?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I dislocated my knee on a ride last weekend and it's been pretty bad since. Today I went to get an XRAY and MRI. I have an appointment to go over the MRI and everything with the orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday, but we went over the XRAY today. To sum it all up, my kneecap isn't fitting right and he says I'm looking at a lot of trouble to fix it.
Does anyone else here have knee problems? Do any of you know of any braces or anything I should look into or ask my doctor about to help when I ride?

I have a long history of knee problems, yet i still run despite the pain. I have not found a brace for me that i liked, but i reccomend you to search it on www.google.com. Might find a good brace there, wish ya luck.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your injury. I was sidelined on the couch for 3-weeks a couple months ago due to a kneecap problem. My doc said to not do again whatever I did to injure it...

No history of dislocations, but I do get knee pains from overstressing them fairly often.
Good luck with your treatments man. Just remember to take it easy while recovering.

Thank you. I hope I can get back out there soon enough. Though even if he tells me I don't need a brace, I'd probably wear one anyway. It felt like my leg was being torn off at the knee, and that was no fun.

That doesn't sound like good advice to me. I hope I don't get to hear that as well.

I don't mind the pain so much, although I can't say I know what you go through. I'm just worried that my knee might dislocate at a horrible time and cause a horrible crash, or the next time it might not pop back in right away.
My mother (a massage and physical therapist with specializations in sports medicine...) and both the doctor say Palumbo braces. My only concern with the knee is biking, so I thought I'd see if anyone here had any recommendations.

That's going to be the hard part. It's only been a week and all I want to do is things I'm not supposed to, like ride. :D

Ditto. Advantage with just stress injuries is low-speed riding is fine, the thing is it's just hard as heck to lay off the sprints.
I love rolling the power on...seeing how fast I can get my bikes regardless of gearing is great fun.

My knee slides in and out of the socket while i am working man that is a sick feeling, never happens on the bike but it happens while i run.
From skidding like a mad man earlier this year, and skidding in the wrong fashion, I'm having some problems with my right knee.
I do believe I've torn some tendons and ligaments in the back of it... No knee pains until I try to make a sweeping back motion... =(

Torn ACL here. Been living with it for 30 years. Cycling doesn't bother it too much thank God. It's about the only athletic type thing I CAN do.

My solution to my knee problems are limiting my riding to at most, every other day. However lately I've been lucky to get out there twice a week.

Almost 30 years of skateboarding ... and a dislocated kneecap (leaving holes in the bones) I started cycling years ago as physio for a knee injury skateboarding. If you dislocated riding I wouldn't even consider riding until you get the DR.s OK. Once it's a go, light spinning is the rule..no torque (yes it's hard not to.) Knees can take sometime to recover from so be patient.

I find that keeping the seat-adjustment on the forward and high side reduces the angle the knee bends and keeps things happy... :).
Probably the worse thing you can do is have it too far back and low, this messes up people with perfectly good knees as well. :(
And keep the forces low by using low-gears and spinning...

One hole behind the kneecap and one in the lower portion of the joint, right where the two bones rub when I extend and heel strike walking. They wanted to "cork" it with autograph/allograph? surgery but it is a relatively new procedure and maybe 200 ppl had gotten it at the time. I got a second opinion and he said if I wasn't hobbled, don't do it. I can walk and ride, and climb stairs to goto bed, so ... I'll wait til the procedure gets better. Biking has allowed my wrecked knees and ligaments to remain my own. As above ,micro adjustments in position will make a world of difference. My seat tube has all these scratches on it from moving it ever so slightly to test a new position. Play with it you'll find the comphy zone , and spin spin spin. Again as you injured it riding I wouldn't consider getting on until Doc says OK. One wrong torque and it could be completely f*@ked once more.

I'd advise getting a second opinion. How did you dislocate it riding? Did you crash?

I have a torn PCL and the docs don't to cut me open. So basicly they told me that I just need to "let muscle build in its place". Since then I've been hitting the weights and riding. It has effected my riding but I am getting better :dunno:

Well, I haven't gone over the MRI yet; going to do that today.
I guess just the twisting of my body and keeping my foot stationary on the pedal. I didn't crash until after it dislocated; I bailed to get my knee back in place.

Unless the MRI shows that I have messed it up pretty good, I believe that's going to be what I'm going to have to do. He was mentioning building up my quads to have better control over it.

twist at the hips next time
Sorry to hear about your injury. Try to be patient in your recovery as reinjury will slow down the healing. My biggest suggestion is to work on the stretching to get full motion back in your leg. This is not fun, but will benefit in the future. After your knee is better you may have to think about walking to learn how to walk without a limp. Hopefully things are not this bad and you will have a full recovery.
I tore the cartilege on the inside of my right new racing motorcycles and that injury allowed my knee to pop out of joint. The therapist had me lifting weights to strengthen my hamstring which helped to hold the knee in place. Cycling was a part of my therapy, but they preferred using a stationary bike. I find that keeping a high cadence helps my knee to feel better. If I hammer the pedals too hard then the knee pain returns and when the muscles are tight the slightest twist can cause a reinjury.
Edit: The Ortho surgeon refused to do reconstructive surgery on my knee because he said it was a mess.

Two of my friends just had knee-replacement surgery. I guess they have a titanium socket that goes in after cutting out the old knee? Seems to be working out well for them. But they said it's only going to last 20-25 years... oh well.. they're one's 72 and the other's 89-years old so they won't have to go through that again in their lifetimes... Amazing thing was they were up and walking around in less than a week! :)

All the pain and knee destruction in this thread is depressing.
Well I just got back from the doctor and the MRI shows that there is a torn piece of cartilage floating around next to my kneecap. You can even feel it with your fingers. My kneecap cut the cartilage when it slid back into place. So it looks like I'm going to be getting surgery.
