Bicycle Mechanics - Upgrade fork on Trek FX bikes

Wanting to get a carbon fork for my 7.3FX, except I'm a newbie and don't know which ones will bolt on easily. Threadless? Size? That's the main things when picking out a fork right? Can someone tell me what kind will work? For quick reference the frame and fork I have are the same as the new 07 7.2fx here:

Any fork w/ a 1 1/8" steertube and V brake bosses will work. As for installation, take it to your lbs. It will need to be cut, star nut installed, and crown race transferred over.

Any one I get will need to be cut? Same rules apply for carbon forks too?

I heard most of the carbon forks are for smaller tires than my 700X32 tires. Where can I find some that will work?

If it has the bosses for v-brakes, it is likely to be set up for wider tires. Look for a cyclocross fork. And yes, they all come with really long steerers, so that they only have to make one model to fit large and small frames. You just cut it to fit the frame you are putting it on.

My older 2005 7200FX has the steel fork you speak of. It rides as nice as the carbon fork does on the Trek 1000. I don't know why you would want to change it to carbon, unless your looking for some bling. The few grams of weight savings is of no consequence on a hybrid bike. However, that said, if money is no problem, upgrade to the Bontrager Carbon fork on the 7.5FX. Probably a $300 plus upgrade if done by your Trek dealer.

You're right. It's probably not a worth while upgrade. I was mainly wanting the good looks and extra feel from the carbon including smoother ride. Maybe I'll switch directions and look to upgrade to some shimano 105 components - hopefully I can find what I need to know to do that so I want have to start another newbie thread.

I have a 7.3 FX, what exactly are you trying to accomplish by making changes? My shifters work without a hitch, the chrome-moly fork is OK for a fitness bike. I don't like the Shimano Nexave cranks because you can't change the rings, but I'll worry about that at a later date.

I, at one time, considered adding drop bars, but found a road bike for that type of riding. Overall I am very happy with the 7.3 as it has helped me get back into biking and lose weight.

I just bought a 7.2FX and plan on making a few upgrades. The stock saddle will go shortly and be replaced by a Terry Fly Tri. The pedals will be replaced by Forte Campus pedals. Next to go is the suspension seatpost. Finally, I may put on some 23 or 28 slicks with 100 or so PSI rating.

Then I stop.
