Foo - The 'real' football

So with these forums being mainly american im guessing most of you wont watch football or 'soccer'. But for those of you who know your stuff on footy then heres my question for you. "Why do teams have 3rd shirts, like liverpool have a red shirt (for home) a yellow shirt (away) and they have a white/turqouise shirt for 'euro'.?

"Why do teams have 3rd shirts, like liverpool have a red shirt (for home) a yellow shirt (away) and they have a white/turqouise shirt for 'euro'.?

The same reason US baseball teams have third jerseys and caps. The same reason some NFL teams wear alternate colors once in a great while (I recall the Bears wearing ORANGE tops once last year). Same reason most NHL teams and many NBA teams have third jerseys. The same reason USPS and Discovery had special team jerseys for Paris on the last three of Lance's Tour victories.

It's to SELL MORE MERCHANDISE.

One other reason for an alternate jersey is in case the other team has a similar color to the usual away jersey. It's especially important in soccer to have distinguishing jerseys.

If this is a quiz and I got that wrong.... please enlighten me! I love learning this kind of stuff.

It may be the "real" football but I'd rather watch the "American" version. That's what I grew up with. When I was in school soccer was for the kids who's parents didn't want to get hurt in other sports. But I have watched some soccer and I appreciate it for being a very competitive and complete game. Which I just happen to not watch.

More stylish perhaps, maybe they sell more jerseys like that. Perhaps the players like wearing those type of jerseys. Who is to say they last longer or don't rip like other jerseys, maybe it helps TV ratings who knows. Many reasons but i think money has a lot to do with it.

Your second point is the actual reason. It was only a few years ago that UEFA started to become lax on allowing an away team to wear a home jersey to avoid mistaken identity. Up until then, you would be reliant on having a third 'emergency' colour if your away was the same as your opponents home.

However, the cynical answer is also correct by a happy commercial circumstance and of course, who are the professional football leagues to argue with fat sacks of cash money?

Now referees have about five dirrerent colors they can choose from - so they don't have a color that could be confusing to the players. Ever watch a children's club soccer match where the jerseys are almost the same color? The result is a whole lot of confusion.
