Living Car Free - How many miles have you Biked VS Driving?

Even though I have 2 cars I am basicallly car lite. My wife and I have been sharing 1 of our cars since Early May.


I have put 860 miles on my bike getting to work since May 15th. This equates to about 1275 miles total if I were to drive.

How many miles do you do in 1 year ?

How many miles would you say you have on your bike or Bikes as a whole ??

last year bike = 8,000 miles

this year, maybe slightly less (1st half of year was working 80-90hr weeks)

Wow that sounds like a lot of miles.

right now I only have in around 1000 miles and my legs really feel it.

How do you do that much ???

I donno, it varies widely in a year. There are stretches when I hardly bike, and then there are very heavily biked stretches... Probably between one and four thousand miles per year on average, depending on how far I have to commute and how much touring I've done in the summer. :)

I don't have a car. Occasionally I drive my parents' car for practice. This year I've probably driven a whopping 150 miles (and that's a generous estimate).

I just got a bike computer for the first time. In the first week, I rode 121 miles. This is a fairly typical week for me except I didn't have any days off work, so I didn't take my weekly just-for-fun long ride (30-40 additional miles). I usually drive a car about 10 miles a month, to run errands for/with my dad.

So basically I ride as much in one week as I drive in an entire year.

Huh. Never thought about it that way before. Not bad, eh?

There's a similar thread in the Commuting forum, so I have the bike part all totalled.

About 3500 miles on the bicycle so far this year and 8000 miles on the car. Car is, however, shared miles between my wife, son and I. That seems to be about 1/2 what we used last year, when I wasn't bike commuting...

I am around 5,000 miles. If you do one trip a day that is only five miles you will have 300 miles on by the end of the month.

So it is rather easy if doing 20 miles is easy to rack up some easy miles.

I am averaging 420 (aprox 300 in commuting) miles a month so far this year.

This year so far, about 9000 km so probably 12,000 by the end of the year (by bike)

driven cars maybe 20K miles in 40 year lifetime; been driven maybe 40K (as kid by parents mainly), biked maybe 80K, flown easily 200K. where's the plane-free forum?

with few exceptions it's worked like this: bikes are for trips under 100 miles unless recreational, cars for 100-1000, and planes for further than that. trains and buses haven't played a big role in my mobility.

taking average speed into account, that's 87% of lifetime travel time on a bike, 12% in cars, and <1% in planes. since most of the car time was as a kid before i had a say in the matter, and my work-related jetting is mostly over, i suppose the bike share will continue to grow until, with any luck, i fall over and die on one sometime in my 90s. the press will report whether i was wearing a helmet.

Never owned a car!!! So the bike wins by a fair way...

I think I ride my bike about 70 miles/week. I think my recent car usage averages out to something like 12 miles/week. For airplanes i'd have an average of about 180 miles a week (!) all because of a once-yearly round trip between Philadelphia and Alaska. My average for buses and trains is probably 1 mile a week or so.

So yeah, where is that airplane-free forum?

I guess I am screwed:cry: I drove 44,000 miles last year and only biked about 2500 miles:eek: I promise I am trying to do better! First thing is to get rid of this job! The only good thing was most of those miles the company paid for.

I don't have an odometer on my bike but I am pretty sure I drive a lot more because I use my bike for most nearby trips and my car for more distant trips. So even tho I get on my bike more often than my car, I still put more mileage on my car over all. I make about 4000-5000 kms per year on my car.

I've had my bike for roughly a year now and mainly ride it for recreational use. I've done around 2150 miles so far but I rarely take car or bus journeys if its under 20 miles

Since I started riding in May, I've put over 2500 miles on my bike and 0 on my truck. Unless you want to count the 3 miles I had my truck towed to my new place after I moved... I haven't bothered to put the transmission back in after I took it out for repairs. I did rent a U-haul truck and drove about 20 miles in that while I was moving.

That's fantastic. You are proof that even a beginner can put a lot of miles in on a bike.

Cycling is actually even less stressful than walking, if you take it slow and easy. My best guess is that cycling has a four to one speed advantage over walking with the same effort. So strolling at 3 mph and "noodling" at 12 mph on the bike are comparable in effort. Likewise, jogging at 5 mph and riding pretty hard at 20 mph.

It may be uncomfortably close to 50/50. I think I've put about 2900 miles on the bike so far this year, in commuting and riding around town. I have no idea how many car miles I've logged. Probably < 200 just counting local and even statewide use, which is great, but: we also spent a week in Cleveland constantly driving a rental car all over the metropolitan area (staying at multiple friends' houses transporting luggage and kids, so public transport would have been too much of a hassle), and a few days in my mom's house in NY state, which involved driving there from Maine and back, as well as driving while there. So those two things must be at least 1000 or two between them.

Since I no longer have a car registered to me, I'm counting any driving for purposes of this question.

Does driving a 4 wheeled ATV count? I drove about 1.5 miles of my property line mostly wooded forest with a thick mud trail last spring. I've had to call for a taxi 3 times last winter for about 27 miles do to heavy snow. I swear I got car sick every time.

I typically go for weeks at a time without even touching a motor vehicle.

I don't own a car. All my car mileage consists of rentals and driving friends' cars as a favor.

Yearly mileages:

Bike: ~8000
Car: ~1000

I drive about 35 miles a week, and cycle about 110.
This doesn't count vacations of course.
Overall, I cycle about 4800 miles a year and drive about 3000, that does include driving long distances when going on vacations or to conventions/etc.
