Three Pedestrians Killed In Separate Fayetteville Accidents

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Police are investigating three separate fatal accidents overnight in Fayetteville.
Authorities said a driver in a pickup truck hit Charles LeCompte on Robeson Street near the intersection with Village Drive around midnight Friday. It's not clear how it happened, but police believe LaCompte rode his bike into the path of traffic. LaCompte died of his injuries. No one else was hurt.
Shortly afterward, police were called to another fatal collision along Person Street near the Cape Fear River. Witnesses say the unidentified victim was walking in the road. No charges are expected.
Earlier in the evening, another pedestrian was killed along Skibo Road near Cliffdale Road. Joseph Krick of Fayetteville died in that accident.

Sounds like business as usual in Fatalville! I got even money the guy killed on the bicycle was A) not riding where he should have been, B) did not have lights or reflectors and was probably wearing dark clothing. That intersection is pretty wide open, and IIRC the lights are on flash that time of night. I have cycled that stretch of road many a time. Unfortunately traffic on Robeson Street is usually traveling at about 10mph over the posted.

Asheville GOT HILLS! Not sure about whether it would be considered cyclist friendly or not. I know there are a lot of areas that are nice to cycle, but with the very narrow roads and tourists, RV's etc. Let me know where you end up! I have sort of started a search for the "perfect" place to retire/cycle. Unfortunately most if not all cities/towns appear to be more and more autocentric, which is not suprising. I think there are going to be some that are better than others but how do you choose? I always thought some of the small towns out in the midwest would make good places to live, somewhere like Oelwein or Dunkerton, Iowa. But the weather would be a major factor out there it gets *****in' cold.

I should also point out that I cycle commuted in Fayetteville (Fatalville) for quite a few years and still ride there occasionally. As is typical of a lot of towns these days the retail infrasturcture is centered around the automobile. Fayetteville has a large transient population (primarily military), and a fairly young testosterone laced population. It is an interesting place to live and grow up. It has a lot of big town issues with small town responses;) :p . IMHO the best cycling friendly city in NC is Greensboro, if you get in the right area. I lived there for a bit and cycle commuted. With a very few exceptions I think any town could be a car free place to live, but you will have to choose your location within that area wisely and live within it's limitations. Where I live now used to be the middle of nowhere. I could literally pull out of my road without looking. In the past 8 years that has changed drastically, they have added over 1,000 homes in a 7 mile radius of our place:eek: a strip mall with a grocery store (Yay!) no more 12 mile drives/rides to get groceries. A golf course community, etc.

We are going to Asheville as soon as my Wife and I's schedules
have matching time off. I am starting to encounter alot of 'are you crazy' and
'your eutopia doesnt exist' in my quest for an oil free, simple lifestyle search...
I moved from PA to escape what you are experiencing now so I can sympathize.
Oh well, like Capt. Ahab I will come face-to-face with the mighty beast someday :)
Its ironic you mentioned the two places you did...My Dad was stationed in Fayetteville
in the 50's and my Sister went to UNC Greensboro in the 70's and I often thought
what a pleasant place it was. Im sure nothing has changed almost 40 years :roflmao:

We were in Greensboro in the early 70's, my dad taught at UNCG, speech and theatre:p Then he got reactivated in the Navy and was sent to Fort Bragg as a liason with the Special Forces:rolleyes: got out and started teaching at FSU, and retired from there. I got back to GSO in the mid 80's, both my sister and one brother graduated from UNCG. They have both since moved back there. I get thru there about once a month, the "inner" city area has actually improved. The area I lived in during the 70's hasn't changed too much. That was down around the Fisher Park vicinity. In the mid 80's I lived intown near Cone Hospital (worked there) and over off Holden just below UNCG (still worked at Cone). I think if I had to pick a city in NC to move to it would be Greensboro. FWIW I was checking there are 4-5 bike shops in the Asheville area so that looks promising.

It's the NC Kaffeeklatsch! I feel compelled to put a plug in for my corner of NC-- Winston-Salem. Several great bike shops, lots of great riding, and tons of beauty and "culture" (and the winters aren't too bad at all.)
But I must say-- you woulnd't go wrong with Asheville or Greensboro either!

Why does the media, as in this case, all to often call a cyclist a pedestrian? A cyclist isn't a pedestrian, unless they are walking beside said bicycle....

I have ridden once or twice in W-S in fact my all time favorite cycle shop Neighborhood Trans (http://ntransportation.com/index.cfm) is there.:D I think the entire Piedmont part of NC is about as close to God's Country as you are going to get.

That was 3 different incidents. One was a guy on bicycle (I don't think the word cyclist is the best description) the other two were pedestrians.

News media reports what they want with little or no knowledge of sematics or grammar.
I guess he was a pedestrian after he got knocked off the bike:p Around here we used to say there are two types of pedestrians...the quick and the dead. Seriously tho there have been major issues around here over the years with people getting mowed down while in crosswalks, crossing with the light. In one case the person got hit by 3 seperate cars and none of them stopped. Never caught the a'holes that did it either.
