**edit** cant get graphs to work.. i'll keep trying

Today was the Bogus Basin Hill climb.. 14.5 miles ~3500ft of climbing. Its was my first hill climb ever.. 3rd mass start. This morning I got there around an hour early to warm up. I parked half a mile away from the starting area and had to right a really gentle hill to get there. I got on my bike and started riding.. and something wasnt right, my heart rate hit 180 on the ride to the start! I guess thats what you get for riding your fixed gear around for two weeks instead of your road bike. But my legs felt all right, so I continued to warm up.
Eventually everyone started to group up in the starting area (240 riders) so I rode over.. i was riding right in front of the starting line and i needed to unclip to walk my bike over a curb and around some people.. but nothing wanted to go well today.. so I hit a little ridge of concrete while unclipping and fell over the other side. that was great for my nerves. Then I go get situated in the center of the pack and wait for the gun.
Bang! everyone is off.. and i start frantically passing people on the first 1/2 mile.. then it starts getting steeper and steeper.. and now im getting passed by them. Adrenaline + Not warming up enough + being out of shape = bad. After about 2 miles we hit the first of two downhill sections and I caught quite a few people on the decent, just by being in a good tuck and not using the brakes.
By about the Half way point of the climb I'm starting to find a good rythm and am now passing people instead of being passed. I had a few gels and set my pace around 10mph.. up from 8mph. No real excitement until the end, the last mile or so was a slight down hill and I was able to catch a rider in front of me and draft for a while for a while then get in 52-11 and power by him.. I ended up crossing through the finish line doing 30-31mph, that felt nice to still have some power in my legs.
I ended up with a time of 1hour 28 minutes, average speed 9.9 mph. It definately felt successful for me.. I made it to the top, something I didnt think was going to happen earlier in the day. I placed 174/240

Did they start 240 riders from all cats together?

that sounds so scary to me, guess the hill sorts things out quick enough
