Introductions - Hello from OKC. Long, boring intro ahead...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Although I have always owned a bike, I have never done a lot of biking. I currently own a Trek 6500, which I bought when I was in college. It is about six years old but I probably only have a few hundred miles on it.

After joining the military, I have let myself get into the worst shape of my life. I have had a hard time motivating myself to get back into shape and am hoping cycling will hold my interest. My commander is big into cycling, which got my boss back into it, and the fever is catching around the squadron.

I am sure most of you "real" cyclists will question the bike I ordered, for it is from an internet bike company. My boss, a former sponsored racer and former bike shop mechanic recently bought a Motobecane with full Dura Ace components and he seems to like it. He told me to get the Immortal Pro so, being a good troop, I did. I am not sure what to expect quality wise, but there are a lot of experienced riders in the squadron that can help me with my bike setup and maintenance. It should arrive this week or next. I have not slept well lately because I am so excited about it.

My goals are to get back into shape, meet new people, and be able to go home on leave and make my dad look bad next time I ride with him. (It is hard to keep up with a recumbent bike on a mountain bike.)

Sorry for the long post.

Hi penny! Here I always thought the military was real hardcore on physical conditioning. Hummm... must be that "New Army" or a different spin on "An Army of One"

Don't mind me, I'm just the wisenheimer around here.

Good luck with the Moto!

Hi penny,

I am also new around here... a couple of weeks new anyway, and also new to road bikes, and from OKC.
I just got a new bike and have just started to get some miles in. I have own a couple of mountain bikes for a while, but some friends talked me into giving the road a try. So far I love it. I can't wait until the next ride.

I hope you enjoy your new ride!!!

In the AF and in OKC. I feel pretty safe assuming TAFB. I've heard there are a lot of cyclists out there. I don't know if they still do but they used to have a fairly large cycling club.

I have not heard about the cycling club, but there are definately a lot of cyclists here. I can't believe there isn't a bike trail on base. I am also shocked at the lack of extensive, well maintained trails in the area. This is the first city I have ever lived in without top rate bike paths (and I lived in Wisconsin for most of my life where it is too cold to ride for a good part of the year.)

Somebody please tell me I'm wrong about places to ride in the local area.

Thanks for all of the replies.

lake Hefner is alright.... 10 or eleven miles. but other than that.. well. I guess there're trails around for mountain bikes etc but for good well maintained paved paths, Hefner, and I think there's something around bricktown as well ...Overholster Lake too I believe.. which I've not checked out yet. I commute, and I love trails too but am much more interested in real-road commuting type stuff. http://www.ecoedmond.org is a group of people up in edmond trying to get bike paths and signs up on the streets to remind people of our rights etc... www.oklahomabicyclecoalition.com is cool when the site works.. I've found that you've got to get used to ride on the streets here, and remember safety, if you want to bicycle around here (helmet, lights, cell phone for emergencies (road rage)). Going around the lake gets old for me. It's alright, but you know, I feel like I'm going in circles (which I am...). There's supposededly a big bike trail that's going to go all over the city but it's been in the works since the early 90's I think...so...yeah... Anyway don't get discouraged, do what you need and want to do. I'm not from this state either but I'm making the best of it. remember the benefits of bycycling.

There is a Tinker cycling club. Check out http://www.tinkercyclingclub.org

There are some trails around. It's a large project that the city is working on. http://www.okc.gov Click on "Things To Do" at the top and then on the page that comes up click on OKC Trails on the left. Good map of what's done and what the trails will be someday. The completed trails at Hefner, the river and south Grand are pretty nice.

I will probably check out Lake Hefner and maybe the routes the Tinker Cycling Club has posted. The OKC Trails project looks like it might be alright when finished, but I probably wont be here long enough to see that happen. Oh well.

I really appreciate the info.
