Southwest - Any Phoenix riders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am in Mesa by Hohokam Park. Just relocated from the Chicago suburbs where I used to ride on forest preserve paved trails. Going to like riding year round now with the nice weather. I am a mechanical manufacturing engineer looking for work so suggestions are welcome. Anyone work for a nice smaller company? Thanks! Don

I'm down in Gilbert and just looking to get into rode riding. I'm currently a runner and looking to buy a road bike. Can anyone recommend a good bike/bike shop? I'd rather not spend more than $1800 on a bike.
Best bike shop in Gilbert is Focus Cyclery hands down. It's just to the SW of Gilbert and Warner. Global bikes is a great if you want to buy a bike for your kid. Focus carries mostly Scotts and Cannondales, if you're looking for a different brand check out Landis in Tempe or Chandler. If you want a Specialized I have a bunch of friends who swear by South Mt. Cycles in Ahwautukee.

What's the cycling culture like in the Phoenix metro area? I'm from Seattle and am considering a move.
I come from one of the healthiest cycling cultures in the nation. I ride a Cannondale CAAD8 R800 and am looking to move to a city where it's warm and dry so I can keep up w/ my cycling year 'round.

I've only begun with the local cycling here in Phoenix, but it seems alive and well. Now that winter is here things are picking up. They had the Tour de Scottsdale today with 1200 riders. In the summer it slows down, as you need to be on the bike by 5:30/6 to beat the heat. I say move. It's beautiful down here.

Your going to be moving to an auto centric valley. I ride 300 + days a year.
Not many people commute with a bicycle. Grid pattern tons of routes with wide flat streets.
Go for it great place to be car free err motor light

3.5% of non-student commuters in Tempe commute by bicycle. For the whole valley the percentage is less that 0.5%

I wonder how many of those people ride on the side walk?
I rarely ever see any one on Southern or Baseline ( I ride everyday on these roads 300 days plus I never see 3.6 percent on them because I would have been either passed or getting dropped. )
Expect a man who has no lights going really slow. I always see the car (after passing me in the other lane) serve to miss the dark guy WOW! Seen him twice in 3 months.
OP
Average age in Tempe is 28yr. There is a movement (ride) on Tuesdays , bike polo was being played by camel back & 24st. A fixie group has been seen riding etc.

There is one guy I've seen on Southern a few times (enough to make me think its a daily journey) who rides in just bike shorts (no shirt) in drops, no helmet (not a judgement, just a description), just on edge of gutter pan, usually riding quite hard.

I am located in Tempe during the week for school and Gilbert on the weekends. I would love to find a group of people to ride with, I am a novice rider but will always take a challenge. If you would like to set something up get in touch.

I just moved out to Maricopa from the Phoenix area. Haven't had a chance to ride yet though as I am rehabbing an injury that is keeping me off the bike for a little while longer.

Hey all, Old Town Scottsdale here. In my experience (which hasn't been much, I've lived in the Valley since January) Rage Cycles on Scottsdale Rd has always been totally awesome with me when I come in with newbie questions. Even if I'm not spending money, someone is always really helpful. I live car-free and don't really have much of an issue, between biking and busing, I can get damn near everywhere I need, as long as I give myself enough time, haha. I ride the greenbelt by next to Hayden road most nights, and have met some pretty cool people (cyclists and otherwise) out there.
If you're in Scottsdale and want to ride, please hit me up! I'll be back in the valley around January first!

Hi everyone. I will be in Phx/Mesa/Litchfield Park from approximately Dec 24-29. Can you tell me about any special holiday club rides going on that week?
Thanks,
Vance

Scottsdale is my favorite place to ride the bike on the road.
Have you tried Pima road/trail? Amazing.

I was just on Maricopa road They just finished construction awesome road to ride on.
The ride on riggs road is rather isolated at night.

I try to ride close to everyday, except this damn rain has ruined my plans the last few weeks. Anyway anyone interested in doing the Saguaroman Triathlon with me, it is only international distance so I figure it will be a good start for my Tri career. If interested feel free to get in touch.

I've ridden nearly every rain day recently. It is so rare to ride in rain it makes for a very different and adventure like ride. Sometimes every day of sunshine gets a bit old.

I love to ride, but honestly lack the motivation to ride solo. I think if I hire a coach, the money spent will get my ***** off the couch and out in the cold and ride.
As for the triathlon, good luck to you. I have a long way to go before i can even think about doing one. 235lbs and 40yo isn't a great combination for a triathlon LOL.

1) Does anyone know of any rides on xmas morning? It's a longshot, I know, but you never know. :)
2) While in town (^^maybe xmas morning), I'm thinking of doing Scottsdale to Bartlett Lake. Has anyone done this route, recently? How is that northern section of Pima Rd for traffic and lane width?
Thanks,
Vance
the problem I have with the rain is the gear and getting it all together.
Why not try spinning on a trainer ? Put a movie on and settle back for a two hour tour.
Yea motovation to ride, I got rid of my car no problem with getting on my bike I just remember what the last bus ride.

I am out in Chandler and just started riding... Have been doing only spin classes and decided it was time to try the road. I ride out on Riggs road starting around Lindsay and move west from there. If anyone wants to ride let me know, I am definately not the fastest guy in the world and being 5'9" and 220 I probably won't be for awhile.

About how many miles from town to Bartlett?
I'm in Glendale personally. I ride the canal a lot, around the Thunderbird Paseo park area.
Anyone else?

I heard they just opened a ped bridge up there on the park.
I love how Union Hills has a bike line all the way to Glendale then stops as planned by the city.

you ever check out pima road?
wheel, hey I'm sorry, I totally missed your reply! I came back to check for more new folks. Yes, I often take Pima, but my stretch only goes for 5 miles, heading south from Chaparral and there's a stop light every mile, hard to keep a good pace. I've since moved a lot closer to work, so I'm taking chances on short distance - 10 miles or so one way - around different parts of town.
