I live in midtown. I do a lot of urban biking on stairs downtown and such. Always in the middle of the night though, since I'm an evening worker.

being that i don't know the area too well, nor the climate (although i have a good idea about that, ha!), i was wondering which bikes i should bring with me. i have a commuter, mtb, & road. even if i don't bring any of them, i can definately have them fedex'd to me later on. please give me some advice, thanks!

I would forget the commuter unless you don't mind going 10 miles or more on it.
We have tons of Mountain biking. Depending on how expensive the road is, that is all you will need. I found commuting in Phoenix is well rather long. I average well over 10 miles a day. Most of my commutes are around 8 - 20 mi.

Haven't bought my bike yet, but plan on it by the end of the year!

Im in chandler. Looking for a couple guys to ride in the east valley. There are two of us that ride on sundays, we're bigger guys, so if you looking for 20+mph avg, we're not the guys for you. Would enjoy talking to some other roadies too.

I'm also out Chandler way.

Would love to hook up for the Sunday rides, but El Tour de Tucson is just a couple of weeks away - we'll have to see what lines up for rides before Casa Grande Century

Last saturday was the first time I rode with this group. There are all types at the event. In fact,
I am 49 and only a commuter; however, I didn't have any problem finding people to ride with.
We went 30 miles last week and I averaged 17 mph and pretty much was in the middle.
There are all shape of riders and I recommend the event.

Just moved to the paradise valley area from out of state a month ago. Been enjoying the mountain preserves until my bike was stolen yesterday.

The GABA rides are a real good mix of people on Saturdays out of Kiwanis. All levels and enough speed to motivate you to get better if that is what you want. Good people who give advice if asked in a very constructive way.

I really should do some of those Saturday GABA rides - it's not that far from Queen Creek and I could really use some advice. (if I can keep up - 14mph sustained is about the best I can do at the moment.)

I've been riding with the Saturday group from Kiwanis Park for the last 3 months and I highly recommend the ride. I am older and slower than most but I seem to fit in different packs each week. The people are awsome and supportive; in fact, I had a flat two weeks ago and a couple of riders stayed with me and gave me excellent advice. See you there!

Sweet! I'll try to make this Saturday's reverse McKellips ride then. Kiwanis park is pretty big - do they meet in one of the lake parking lots, the one by the rec center or one of the smaller ones? (Or should I just look for a lot of bicycles? ;P)

The ride starts from the parking lot that is just south of the lake. If you enter from Guadalupe Road, head north and about 1/2 mile on your left you will find the parking lot.

I just did a ride from Phoenix to Prescott a loop route need any information let me know.
I did it in three days using Wickenburg transit for 40 miles of the around 200+ mile trip.
Cost 40 dollars.
cycled 9 hours for 60 miles 9 hours for 46 miles and 9 hours 60 miles 2.30 hrs 40 miles.

i just moved to chandler. would like to find some people to ride with. i have 4 bikes, all are custom choppers except for an 80's nishiki century i picked up at the salvation army for $20. ill be making the nishiki into a single speed as soon as i get access to tools. anyone else cruise a custom chopper in the east valley? if so, pm me if you want to ride sometime. nothing turns heads like a gaggle of chopper bikes rolling down the street...

Glendale here. Check out the Moon Valley chapter of the AZ Bike Club. They ride from Moon Valley Park in N Phx Saturday & Sunday mornings (6AM during summer). Ave speed about 15 MPH so pretty casual.

New Chandler member checking in. First new bike in my adult life, already had 3 tire punctures so far. Welcome to biking the canals in Arizona I guess? Now I'm just trying to decide what puncture resistant tires to go with, such as Armadillo Elites or Marathon Pluses. Looking forward to cooler temps and hopefully fewer flat tires once I get some new tires.

I have gatorskins tires and they are pretty bombproof. No flats yet on them and being an az commuter I think that's pretty good.

I too use gatorskins 25c and can go thousands of miles between flats. I've had to replace rear tires from wear before they ever had a flat. I have also gone 100 miles between flats.

I was having the same problem with about one or two flats a month. I put a set of gatorskins on in Nov 06 and haven't had a flat yet. I commute 10 miles one way to work 3-4 times a week via the canal trails and a few miles on 15 ave, 3rd street and Central. Awsome tire!

I traded in my gatorskins in for some wtb all-terrainasarus 32 cross tires and tubes with a couple of ounces of stans. works great and i can hit the canals, trails and deal with the construction.

Sucks for traffic, especially since some motorists honk continuously and scream at me out of their cars to get off the road (even though they have a whole other lane they can be in, there is no other traffic, and I am staying to the right 18" of the roadway wherever physically possible, or else am in a marked bicycle lane). I am not blocking their passage in any way, or impeding traffic, they simply don't seem to understand the laws and think bikes have no place on the road. Some other motorists (different ones and usually much younger) like to try to spook riders by vrooming their engines, shouting out the window HEY! or honking, and the like. Only one has ever actually tried to run me off the road, and a police car was right there, and chased the guy down. I didn't even have to make a statement, they just told me to go on about my business.

Glendale is better about bike paths and stuff than Phoenix is, as their police tend to actually do something about the people that park in bike lanes marked as "No Parking", whereas in Phoenix even if I call about it they do nothing, and I always see the same vehicles parked in the same place day after day, within a few feet. Obviously lives nearby but can't be bothered to park in their driveway/garage/whatever. Usually around apartment complexes, and most commonly around Metrocenter Mall (as I'm thru there a lot for the access to the canal bike baths and such).

Until CompUSA closed all their Valley stores, I used to bike to work at Arrowhead mall in Peoria along the canal; I love the park thru that canal, but hate the hills on the up slopes. :-) That's a part of why I'm doing the electric-assisted bike conversion, (linked in my sig).


Other than that, it's *usually* good fun to bike around, though securing it once I reach somewhere is a whole other story. :-(

I do *everything* by bike, including shopping, so it's really important to me to be able to secure it. There are stores and stripmalls where there is not even a secured signpost I can use to chain to, and would have to carry a 6-foot or longer chain to go around the "awning supports" that are there. I've written to the property owners and stores wherever possible to let them know that they are losing the business of all those who only have bikes for transportation by not having *secure* lockups available for bikes, but I've never gotten a single reply in all the years of doing it. Never seen any change either--not that I expected any.

I'm down in Gilbert and just looking to get into rode riding. I'm currently a runner and looking to buy a road bike. Can anyone recommend a good bike/bike shop? I'd rather not spend more than $1800 on a bike.

I had a good experience at Global Bikes on the northeast corner of Gilbert & Guadelupe. They sell bikes anywhere from $300 to $7000 there and have at least 1 or 2 real experts on staff for road bikes.

Really? I live in west Mesa, and I almost never get honked/yelled at, and I'm out there riding all the time (car-free). I do most of my riding on the arterial streets, too.
I bet you've seen some drastic changes in the city having been here since '85.

The lack of cyclists (not sidewalk pedacyclists) is my biggest concern.

I am now in Tempe. I found Central Phoenix was better. Tempe does nothing to get me over the railroad tracks, freeways or rivers and canals. I must go over roads with 40-45mph traffic.

I bought my bike off of craigs list. You can find some good deals on great bikes, plus you can try before you buy..unlike ebay. Good luck!
