What year did the release tab go from flat to spoon shaped? I have heard 1973 and 1978. I can't tell much from the Campy catalogs that are online as there are gaps between the years.

Thanks!

It was 1978 for sure. The same year the C.P.S.C. (Consumer Product Safety Commission) mandated changes to NR/SR. Also included are:
A front derailleur lip
A 2.5 mm increase in spacing between crank spider and arm to clear the front derailleur lip with corresponding increase in BB axle length
The curved QR lever & ball-end added to QR conical adjuster
Dome shape added to QR cam lever on brake calipers
Plastic covering added to the wheel guides on the brake shoes
Plastic safety shields added to rear derailleur screws
The word "Patent" is changes to "Brev" on the chainring, chainring bolts and crank dustcaps

That is what I was afraid of.....

All my bikes are pre-78 and the only Campy brakes I have use the spoon shaped lever. Are brakes marked in any for date code?

I think some of that stuff may have come earlier, as I purchased a Pat. 76 rear derailleur and it had those idiotic plastic cones on the screws.

Thanks for the info!

I have never seen the brakes marked with date codes as you would with the cranks, derailleurs or cone nuts on the hubs. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I have seen some of those discreptancies you are referring to with the plastic cones on the early derailleurs and I just presumed that at one point in time someone added the plastic to it. But the plastic may indeed have come earlier as you stated. Definitive answers may continue to be ellusive.

Well, as luck would have it, I picked up a set of flat lever brakes today on Ebay. Those will suffice on either my chrome Paramount or my Raleigh Pro.

The search continues.......
