Rides and Races - Gainesville!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think there are a couple of people on here, and maybe a few who just read, but anyway, you should come out every Sunday (even today!) to the Gainesville High School track and ride bikes. Around 4:45 or so, I guess is when people show up. It's a lot of fun, and we need more people, so tell your friends too. Let's get some races going again.
Oh yeah, NW 13th St. and 19th Ave.

i've only got beaters left, that aren't packed (i'm moving out of this place again!), so that's what it's gonna have to be.
edit: geared, too, ha!

Awesome. We had five people today, but it started raining so we had to cut it a bit short.
We'll be out there again next week, and the next week, and so on. Hope to see you there!
someone left a note in my spokes about this a week or two ago.

Yeah, you ought to see if you can unpack that Miyata and built it back up for next week. (That was your bike, right? Am I getting confused?)

are you talking like a running track? are you guys riding track bikes?
mikearena
09-11-06, 07:59 PM
Yeah, it's just a paved running track. It's pretty smooth. No banked corners, but we'll take what we can get. We just sort of ride laps, sometimes race, sometimes do time trials. You know, have fun.
I guess most of us ride track bikes. There's generally a fixed conversion, and every now and then someone brings a freewheel (gasp!). We're generally non-discriminatory though.

09-12-06, 03:07 AM
haha, yeah that's my miyata. it's safely packed away where I can't waste any of my packing time on bike tomfoolery. i'd like to throw some clipless pedals on the kona and give it a go though. i'd feel way more comfortable about cornering if i didn't have those monster-mash bmx ones that are on right now.

Sunday's coming up soon again. Just thought I'd give everybody plenty of time so they could adjust their schedules accordingly and all.

Yeah, I understand that... You just moved here right? Watch out if you're stuck in the dorms, you'll be sick all year. Unless you get out and get some fresh air that is...
And racing for a few hours is great stress relief if classes are getting you down.
Alright, seriously though, I'm starting to sound like a drug pusher or something with this thing. Hope to see you out there soon and feel better!
P.S. What bike do you ride, so I don't keep jamming notes in your spokes, and so I can say hi if I see you?

What can I say, those who can do. Those who can't buy a skinsuit on ebay so it looks like they can...
Regular jersey and shorts for me tomorrow... Bike clothes are DEFINTELY NOT required though for anyone thinking about coming out. I just like looking goofy.

I don't even have a bike with skinny tires anymore to race on! my only functional bike right now is a KHS Solo-One SS mountain bike, with knobbys (the kona you saw is packed and on it's way to detroit to join the miyata, and my road bike is kind of in pieces right now)
I'll definitely go out and help with moral support, though.

I live downtown so I don't have to worry about dorms or communal showers.
I'm starting to feel better but I have to do a ton of drawing for one of my classes.
I have a blue Schwinn conversion. the bike is a mess because I bent my last bike in an accident and just threw whatever was salvageable on a borrowed frame/fork. I'm an art major so my bike is always around there. you might have seen me somewhere with my huge brown reload bag.

Ha, eff that. No more Sunday races, folks.
Apparently due to the recent increase in the amout of vandalism, they're keeping the track locked during non-school use hours. The guy mowing the grass was nice enough to let me do some laps for about 20 minutes, though.
Not like anybody else showed up anyway. Your loss, you missed the total awesomeness that was the last Gaineville Ghettodrome Sunday.
Almost made it a year too...

P.S. Every other city has it's own thread. This is now the Gainesville ride thread. Who wants to go on a ride Monday (September 17th) evening/night? Nothing too fast or long, as my good (fast) bike is out of commission indefinitely.

sorry didn't get to make it out there, mike, had some familial obligations, etc.
best of luck in the coming time with gainesville. more people need to be organized to ride, and surely it's possible.

Damn, people in Gainesville are riding fixies? I lived there for four years (guess why?) and never saw one (other than on the velodrome) until I moved to New York last summer. Now I'm ****ing addicted...and to think i wasted my time on a damn mountain bike the whole time i lived there. Ahh, what i wouldn't give to hit that downhill left sweeper from archer onto 13th and sprint up the hill on my current setup. or divebomb the big hill on west university and catch the green at 34th...maybe head over to the Top and have a $3 pint of guinness and a chicken philly...those were the days...

If you have some flyers on you, I can pick up a stack tomorrow at arond 11:30 at the SG bike repair, if you're there.
Wait, down the hill or up the hill?

Nope, open to anybody and everybody is my guess. I mean, I'm not organizing it, but I know the guy who does doesn't ride fixed, so yeah, whatever. This'll be race number five or six for Gainesville in the past year. Hopefully we'll get more than 5 people.
You should definitely call in sick or skip class or do whatever you need to to be there. It'll be fun.
P.S. Tell your friends.

yep, any bike is welcome. i mostly flyered fix/ss and fast looking road bikes, but thats because of the limited amout of time i had today. i want as many people as possible to come out and have fun so help me get the word out. id make the entry free, but i want there to be a cash purse as an encentive. its baisically gona be winner take all on the cash (i might use a few bucks to buy some beer for everyone to have at the finish, depending on the crowd. but im not keeping any) there will be other prizes im providing to. some of its authentic TDF, but thats all il say.
oh and i did it at 5:30 so most people would be out of class, and traffic would be at its worst...

I gotta be in Sarasota this weekend, otherwise I'd try to make it out for the race. But, I can say that a number of St. Pete folks are bringing their bikes up for Halloween/Fest. Might not be a bad idea to organize something that weekend.
BTW, that track looks awesome. Do they chase you out for being there?

the race wont set out till about 6:00, but try to get there at 5:30, or 5:45 at the latest. if you are driving in from out of town, allow your self some extra time to find parking on/near campus.
i take it you got the flyers at the shop today mike. thanks, and let me know if you (or anyone else) want some more to hand out.

Give us an update: How many showed? How'd it go? C'mon, info for all us that had **** weekends.
what was the route like? I don't know gainesville that well so I'd have probably gotten lost if I was in town for the race.
stephen: I might have an extra bike by Fest time but it will be a conversion/beater. still 57 though.

Alright, 1st went to some guy who's name I don't remember, but was running 9 speed with a Spinergy Rev X in the rear. Nice stuff.
Second actually went to onceinalifetime which is ridiculously impressive, as he's not from around here. Third went to Brendan who came in just after that.
I think there were 11 people or so total, so a decent showing and a good time. I came in second to last, due to my inability to read/follow directions. I showed up at what I thought was the finish line, and sat sipping a Sam's Cola for 25 minutes before I realized I was in the wrong place. Yeah, second time that's happened to me.
For those quasi-familiar with Gainesville, the course was from Turlington, down to Shands, to the top of the parking garage (6-8 levels) back up the huge hill to Turlington. Then to your choice of the two Wal-Marts to pick up a Sam's Cola. At this point, I thought the finish was back in Turlington, but it turns out it was actually the park at 34th St. and 8th Ave. Sillly me.
Mailer, I think I saw you ride through Turlington a little before the race (blue bike, bare drops, brown bag?) I yelled something, but I don't think you heard me.
Anyway, thanks to roadgator for organizing the shenanigans and providng refreshments and goodies at the finish, and thanks to everybody for showing up. It was a great time.
Now I've just got to brush up on my reading comprehension before Halloween in Tally and/or December in Gainesville.

haha I knew I heard something. I was on my way to El Indio (bad mistake because I felt sick all night) because I was super hungry.
I left the blue bike in Jacksonville and brought the green Mercier my parents got me. free bikes woooo.

Gainesville! you guys need to gather troops and come for Talloween, it'll be awesome and if any of you guys need places to stay we can work it all out; there's a hell of a lotta events going on that weekend so it'll be worth it
