I just finished the hardest ride since I began commuting last Dec. About 27 miles and 1,500 ft of elevation gain. The first half was about 95% uphill, beginning at 7,000 ft and ending at 8,500 ft.
I began biking simply because I don't like cars that much, was sick of owning one, and couldn't really afford one at the moment anyway. Over the year I've grown to really love biking, seen some really great sights, strengthened my knees from arthritis, and built some good heart strength. I've been riding a mtn. bike with slicks but I'm hoping to buy a nice road bike next summer after I move. I remember about a year ago riding about 28 miles with an elevation LOSS of 1,000 ft. It took me 45 min. longer than today and I could barely stand when I was done. What a difference a year can make!
