Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - do people build up Ti bikes as singlespeeds

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i've always wanted to build up a good bike. i don't have the $$$ to upgrade everything at once, so i wanted to get a decent frameset and place a single speed on it and build up from there at my leisure (who knows - maybe i'd want to keep it that way)

can you put any tooth cog on the back? a 15 for example?

this may be an obvious question but i really don't know.

Sounds like a fine idea to me. If you already have some parts laying around then the easiest way to make a singlespeed is to use a standard rear wheel and using a gear from an old cassette and some spacers place the gear in the place where it makes the best chainline towards your crank on the freehub body. Then remove any extra rings on the crank and use shorter chainring bolts to tighten down the remaining ring. Be sure that the chainline is straight from the front chainring to the rear cog, if it isn't then readjust the two as necessary, move the rear cog over a spacer or two. Then use an old rear derailleur and set the limit screws so that the derailleur hangs directly underneath the rear cog. Then thread the chain through as normal and you have a singlespeed. You will want to keep it this way, trust me.

can you set your own chain lengths based on what front and rear cog you use?

which spacers are compatable?

Here's a Ti SS frame builder

Matt Chester Ti (http://www.mattchester.com/)

Sp to answer whether people build up Ti bikes as singlespeeds, yes.

I don't know this person, don't own a frame buy him, nor have I heard any reviews. Just something I found while surfing one day.

Ti is a vary hard tough metal. Can the rear axle nuts bite into the dropouts sufficiently ?
Most Ti bikes have vertical dropouts, so axle movement is not a problem, but that is not much help on a SS. Ive never seen a Ti frame with horizontal ones.

The chain length will have the slack taken out with the old derailleur you used to tension the chain. But yes you will still need to cut the chain a little to make up for the new gear ratio. Your local bike shop should carry cassette spacers, you will need probably 7 or 8 of them depending on their thickness. Or if you took an old cassette apart (some of them are held together by tiny bolts on the back side) for your rear cog, then use the spacers you salvaged out of it.

Matt Chester, sweet frames! Not cheap, but beautiful welding and custom geometries!

It depends on the hub and the type of ti that they use on the dropout. Some ti are harder than others, so some hubs slip on 'em. I have a Chester, and my boys have met the stem once, when I was still running a Phil hub. I threw on a tug to prevent that from happening again. With my Chris Bling, it has never slipped.

...Chester, with Paragon horizontal drops:

no one does. All these pictures and URLs are fabrication, pure lies. Nothing but steel exists. Nothing...oh, and beer pie.

Yes.

I see a bike begging for an ENO and a fixed gear! I'll come over and help! (build the wheel, perhaps?)

Thank you, Sohi. 'Tis true, I can do whatever in Ti...fixed....singlespeed....chopsticks...... My welder rides Ti, I'm just a sucker for steel ( mostly because I like pretty colours and can't bring myself to paint Ti )

Okay, that's a lie - I'm too cheap. :o

$1495 for a Just1Fix Ti or 221v Ti, $1650 if you like discs. A bit more for custom.

Screw beer pie, Guinness pie is where it's at. The also do fried fish in beer batter here. Do you guys have that?
