Foo - How bad does John Madden suck?

Watching the Colts/Giants game tonight and Fat Boy John Madden is again Master of the Obvious (yes, worst than Joe Theismann).

His delivery is not smooth and he always adds useful info like " The reason why these players are fast is because they are quicker".

Boomer Esaison is so much better on ESPN radio - he got the shaft as MNF a few years ago..

Madden was also overated as an NFL coach and some of his own players anonymously said that he cost them at least two more trips to the Super-Bowl.

Other than that, I love the guy....:rolleyes:

he sucks like a black hole, and by the looks of him I think alot of food gets sucked up in the process

But he has about 20 times the energy of Howard Cosell and Dan Dierdorf combined. There's no awkward silence with John in the booth. ;)

Yeah. He last like what? Two games? Then he made some dumb statements about McNabb being overrated, and poof! Sanity returned.

He was worse than Jimmie the Greek. Made a couple statements that were patently racist!

Back in the 80's people might also listen to football on the radio, so dead space is a much bigger no-no. Still, it's the nature of the beast; media stars stick around longer they should because they become institutions.

Yeah, the old vanguard of baseball/football announcers on the radio still knew when to let crowd noise tell the story better than they could. Growing up in St. Louis, I'll tell you that listening to Jack Buck do a baseball game on the radio was incredible. He was not constantly chatting about inane stuff to fill the void. Ballparks have mics dangling from the booth to capture the crowd, so you'd get to hear vendors hawking peanuts, beer, etc. You'd hear fans chattering. The play-by-play guy would let you know what was going on on the field of play to keep you informed. Same with football, which is inherently more chatty on the radio because so much goes on in every play.

Television is a completely different beast because the pictures inform the viewer in addition to the play-by-play and color commentator. The best of them don't care about their celebrity status and just call the game and give you relevent background information. Guys like Madden are so into their celebrity that the Turkey/Duck/Chicken leg award becomes the object of a Thanksgiving day game to him.

To that same point, the graphics, music, fluffhead sideline reporters, etc., that everyone seems to blame on FOX have become a major distraction to watching games. Fortunately, the camera work, instant replays, and virtual in-the-huddle experience provided with today's technology offsets the idiocy that networks think football fans need to augment and entertain the hapless viewers.

Do you recall back in the 80's when NBC showed a Jets game with NO broadcasters. It was an interesting experience, but not necessarily successful.

Considering the 'quality' of the other broadcast teams (Monday Night Football anyone?), I thought it was great to hear some Madden. But then again, I have a Bill Simmons' Unintentional Comedy bias to my watching.

He had an absolute gem last night talking about Giants' running back Brandon Jacobs. He was gushing about Jacobs' swftness and footwork, saying other guys his size are "usually heavy legged with cankles" :roflmao: absolute beauty. He also busted out "tickey-tack" describing the offensive pass interference call that was, well, tickey-tack.

I like him :)

I also don't think Madden adds any real value to the booth. I like Al Michaels and if he was paired up with someone better I think the game would be a lot more fun to watch. I am glad that NBC has Costas leading the pre-game. I thought that group was pretty good. I am not a fan of Bradshaw on Fox nor do I like Ditka and Irving on ESPN. Although those suites that Irving wears are always a eye catcher.

+1, I usually enjoy him, and he's great for new fans to learn about the game.

I think Madden is funny. A lot better than listening to Howard Cosell. Who else besides Madden could get by with saying running the ball up the A hole and then give a two minute explanation.

Another funny line I heard was during the playoffs in 1985 for the Bear's game. The announcer listed Suey, Getts, Moorehead and then was silent.

He's a bit better than the coaches. Ever see the halftime interviews where the losing coach is asked what he's gonna do in the next quarter? The answer is always something like...

"We gotta protect the football"

"We need to get our offense moving and try to make some touchdowns"

or

"Defense needs to step up a bit in order to keep them from scoring"

Believe me , I have my rich and famous idols to like Eddie Van Halen, Jack Nicklaus,Bobby Orr, Joe Montana and others. These guys had coolness and talent unlike fat ***** Madden.

He has a really cool console game created and named after him. I actually preferred the ESPN NFL game more for its better realism, a few years ago. Madden NFL has always been one of the most popular games for console players, though.

I am glad that NBC has Costas leading the pre-game.

I kept waiting for Costas to say, "We'll head over to women's figure skating after this" --his voice equals the Olympics to me, not football. I think Bettis did a fine job. I also think the producers have them sitting too far apart. Sit them closer, it'll come across chummier and less formal...

Boomer is a great sports broadcaster, very knowledgable of the sport. How can a coach cost a team a couple of super bowls?. I would rather blame: players, offensive coordinator and even yes the owner (AL Davis).

I'd say that John Madden and the President suck on the same level...more than a Hoover industrial vacum cleaner does.

Madden gets a pass from me. He is sorta like the most senior drunk at the bar, they obviously are wasted and don't have a lot to contribute, but they have been around so long that you really wouldn't want to be in the bar without them.
