" Thank you for the invitation, but I am taking a lady friend to her first organized ride in Ottawa on that day. I will think of you guys fifty miles away while I eat pumpkin pie at the Pumpkin Pie Ride ".

We're semi-organized, and if a pumpkin pie will change your mind, I'll bring one.
Bring one anyway....;) I'm sure someone will eat it.

EDIT: You might get aham if you bring birthday cake though...

Alright.... Let's bump this thread and get the enthusiasm going again. Weather related concerns aside, here's what I have gathered from the above about who may or may not be riding. Chime in to confirm you'll tentatively be there, or ask to be added to the roll call...

Maybe something sorta healthy like turkey hot dogs or somethin'.

If the second leg is leaving at 11:00, there is a chance I could make it for legs 2 and 3. It is listed as 37 miles-1 hour from my house. I could leave my house by 10:00 and drive fast. I do have to take my son to hockey from 9:20 to 10:20 but it is only a few minutes from my house but I think I can get out of other responsibilites based on the fact that I will be
1. Taking son to hockey tonight after we finish homework.
2. Taking 2 kids to Taekwondo tomorrow and Wednesday along with getting them dinner.
3. Thursday taking son to drum lessons.
4. Friday son to hockey.

I just might have enough points to do this. My only concern is the 8:00 group will ride 38 in just over two hours and that will put them back before 10:30 and I do not want to hold anyone up.

Kenal0, we'd love to have you there, but are we seriously worth the complicated points equation you set forth above??

If you did want to make the metric portion or want to know where we are with regard to your availablity to drive out to Hampshire, all you'd need to do is call one of us and let us know you're on the way. PM if you want phone details.

Psimet2001
09-25-06, 01:10 PM
Kenal0 - If we have a mechanical, or need to slow down, or stop for a while at the stop on the first leg them we may not get back until right near 11. We'll have to refuel, etc.

I am going to leave an info / message sheet on my car. It will tell whoever shows up what time we left for what route.

Like CyLowe stated...just give us (me - probably because I am garaunteed sweep) a call to see where we're at. Worse comes to worse we could always hang around for a couple of minutes to get you on board. - just depends on the size of the ride....if there's only 6 or 7 of us then we can wait. ;)

You do not understand- That is my schedule, ride or no ride. It is like this every week and both son and daughter are going to the same place on Sunday afternoon so if the weather is nice, I am going to try and make it. I will know Saturday evening if I am going and if I am on the way and running late, I will call a cell and let you guys know. It sounds like a good time and I hate to miss out if possible.
Going to get in a quick 20 miler after work as the weather is great out now!!!

Everyone is welcome!

Average speed is a fuzzy way to explain things. I think my average speed for the last 100 miler we did was something like 16.0 mph.

Can't speak for future rides, but if they are like this weekend's ride, we will have someone dedicated to 'sweeping' the route, meaning they will stay with the 'slowest' group riders or with anyone who has a road-side mechanical problem (flat tire, etc) to insure everyone gets back.

You'll probably see us cross your path on the Pumpkin Pedal. Avg...as CyLowe mentioned...isn't really a super clear indicator. This ride, in particular, is a social ride. We(I) will ride as slow as the slowest rider. Some others will ride faster.

As a group on other rides most of us ride in the 16-17 avg range for a century (6 hr ride, 7 hr total). That means a lot of low-mid 20's while cruising. It depends on day, route, condition, etc...

Depending on how this ride goes there will probably be rides at various levels in the future. I set this ride up mainly as a "get to know you" ride, and as an opportunity for "lesser experienced" riders to attempt a longer route...having a group to ride with.

EDIT: Oh and this is NOT a guys only forum/ride. It is a Bike Forums forum, and a ride for all. ;)

Ha! - yeah 20 sounds fast, but if your computer says 15-16 at the end of a ride around here then you spent a good portion of the ride at speeds over 20. Like I said our averages are in the 15-17 range. On no drop rides though our averages are set by the slowest rider.

Hope to see you out there on the next ride.

My solo rides are 16-17. Riding with a group around 20 mph is about the same so if you are in the 15-16 range solo then you will have no problem. I am not a leader, I follow, just ask the guys here I have road with. They could not tell you what the back of my jersey looks like.

I rode with these guys for the first time a week ago at the North Shore Century in Evanston and we were cruising along in the 18-22 mph range for the first 20 miles (before we split up to take different routes). I ride solo in the 15-17 mph range and had no problems hanging with them. Don't worry about speed...just come out and have some fun!

(....C'mon, CyLowe, you know you want a steel bike!)

I've got a Cro-Mo mountain bike, so my limited stable does include The Steel. Thing weighs about 50 pounds!

Now if you've got something in a 57-58" Ti road frame, we're in business!

BTW, for those concerned with my clipping-in abilities based on the North Shore ride, I will be on more modern pedals for this ride. The Keos have finally arrived from the UK. :D

What did you think of the NSC? We were surprised they ran out of gatorade and water up in Kenosha. It was good weather, but the wind was pretty strong coming back in Kenosha, didn't you think

I wussed out with Kimber and we only did the 50 mile loop, so never did get into Wisconsin. From the post-ride reports (the endless whining and so forth from certain BFNIC members...;) j/k) I am glad that I opted out of the century. It sounds like it was total hell coming back South. The 50 mile loop was an absolute joy though...almost entirely residential and no real wind to speak of.

OKOKOK! I'm in...for the century. I can't just keep reading about you guys doing this. BUT, I'm counting on you all to make it worth my while. No pressure, but I already spent 15 big ones  to register for the Pie ride in Ottawa. And I'll be misssing out on that piece of pie, too! :( I have to warn you though, I've never ridden in a paceline, but I'll try anything once (and things I like, to excess). So...anything in particular I need to know beforehand?

Hey, I dropped $20 for the Apple Cider Century last December and I'm skipping that ride to stay home for the BFNIC ride!

Don't worry, we've never ridden in a paceline, either. ;) Just remember this.... do not overlap with the wheel in front of you. We're not some crazed club demanding a perfect rotating line or anything. It's about a good ride

And I have to add to the above.... wind on the NSC? I don't remember any wind.... Geez, Psimet, it's like we never rode the Spring Forward back in March. Now that was wind. Cracking 10 mph felt like speeding that day!

Psimet2001

CyLowe called the Forest Preserve for me and the Shelter is already reserved for Sunday. If we do an after ride meal it will have to be more like tailgating. As for an after-ride beer...I am all for that. My wife will be meeting us at the end (getting a ride) so I will have no worries.

I'm busy putting together the route sheets, and BFNIC jersey proofs, etc....so if someone else on here wants to head up coordinating a possible after-ride meal/cookout....have at it. Otherwise I'll be there hanging out with whomever wants to stick around....at least for a while....;)

EDIT: I think it is against Kane County Forest Preserve policy/rules to have any alcohol in the preserve....so I "won't" ;) be bringing ;) any alcohol ;) with me ;). That would be un-ethical and a violation of park policy.
