Great Lakes - BF Ride - Oct 1st (BFNIC) - Chicago-Rockford-Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is anyone particularly familiar with the ride area who could organize things? I like the idea of a cookout or some kind of post-ride activity, so I am definately on board and would be happy to bring something.
There's not a lot in the immediate area, which is one of the reasons it's a great place to ride. :)
The town of Hampshire is about three miles west on Allen Road, but there's not too much there. The Chick'N'Dip drive in (kind of a hot dog / ice cream place) is all I can think of there. Corner of IL-72 and State Street.

Is that from Skilling? Cause for a million a year, he is ALWAYS ;) correct.
BTW, I don't know why I am so obessed with that guy. It must be the amount of money he gets to read half-truths.

Yeah, it runs in the family. His brother Jeffrey did the same thing. ;)
It's the first time I looked in this forum and it sounds like fun. I've never done a full century before but if I'm not up to it, it'll be easy to bail (hopefully unlikely). I don't mind the wet and I don't mind the cold but if the two combine I may be out. I also have to run this by the wife.
Hope to see you there.

Oh crap....good luck. We've all been down that road. I'm thinking of getting one of those life-size "Safety-Man" type dolls to serve as a sit-in for me. I can see her talking to it while it's laying on the couch with the remote in it's hand.
"So I woke up at 8 thinking I heard our son go.....blah, blah, blah,...then Nancy started talking about how....blah, blah, blah...I don't understand why they just don't talk to her about it.....blah, blah, blah..."
Meanwhile I'd been flying along some ride in total bliss......I'd just need to find one that is programmed to say, "Uh-huh" whenever there is a slight pause in her talking....
EDIT:BTW hope to see you there!

My participation Sunday will depend on if I can breathe by than or not. I got hammered with some fever, chest cold crud Sunday and still barely have enough energy to sit at my desk, let alone get on the bike.
I hope to be able to ride Saturday to see how I feel. I'll give a definte no or yes Saturday afternoon.
I'd hate to miss this ride because of illness.

That's like 12.3 feet of climbing per mile. .002% average grade!! We're going to totally explode out there!

ZICAM or ZINCAM whatever that stuff is Cylowe recommended to me totally stopped my cold/flu symptoms in their tracks. I started to feel sick, sore throat and headaches, the morning of the NSC. Picked up some of this stuff in pill form from Walgreens and popped 4 or 5 a day and by midweek I was training for a 5k. The stuff works. I also took some Cold Day/Night Meds with it. Good luck and hope to see you there. Later.

Climbing! CLIMBING!!! This is Illinois for god's sake. I didn't think there was that much TOTAL elevation in alll of Illinois put together! And I distinctly agreed to a century! What's this 103 stuff? Can't you realign a road or something? Actually I'm getting pretty psyched for this. But usually if I go up 1275 feet I'm on a chairlift, and I've got skis on.:)

Ha!:D - I hope everyone understands that "climbing" is a term used loosely in this case. As CyLowe mentioned it equates to an average grade of ...well....0%. Flat. Keep in mind the 1200ft of climbing means there's 1200ft of descending...
As for the 103...I TRIED...for a LONG time to get exactly 100. I might be able to get you close the day of. Just have you cut a road on the first loop. The other two loops really didn't have many options...:( .
I moved my saddle tonight...a lot.... I might re-think that, but I kept seeing pictures of me riding and noticied that I was really riding too low. Good thing is that I put tape on the rails and the seatpost before I moved anything....:D - years of mistakes....

Nah, if I make the 100, I can make 103. It's the first 100 that's going to kill me, not a measley 3 at the end.:)
I'm in, hopefully for the full 103 or whatever it ends up being. See you Sunday!
I am already planning out a BFNIC Will County Flat, but not totally Flat, Corn Field Metric for 07!!
I am highly doubtful for Sunday, but all this talk has me incredibly intrigued. Never imagined when I started that I would even think about something like this. I am more inclined to wait for Aham's century next year. If I were to show, what and how much do I need to bring in liquids and food? I'm generally a 1-3 hour rider and have no concept of what is necessary food\drink wise for a century. Thanks and if I don't make it, I'd love to do the BFNIC Will County Flat, but not totally Flat, Corn Field Metric in 07.

Scheduling concerns and complications may be rearing their ugly heads. Sunday might not happen for me depending on too many factors to even attempt to explain. Tho the chances are getting greater of a Kimbercop no show, the ride is still my first priority.

Baldy - Remember we've got multiple routes going. If you don't feel up to the century then jump on the metric! At the very least you know you can hit the 31. This is gonna be a rare type of ride. You'll kick yourself if you end up missing it. ;)
Plan on a 6-7 hr riding century. Then add a little extra. Some guidelines say that you should consume about 200 calories an hour during a century (double check that...there is a lot of info out here on this forum about that).
Remember that sports drinks count. Gels are about 100 cals, bars 250-300 cals, normal bottle of sprots drink can be 150-250 cals. Try to bring a sandwich (real food) for at least one stop is you are doing the metric or full century, otherwise you could end up getting "sweet stomach".
Guideline for water is about 1 bottle an hour. It will be a little cooler so many won't even drink that much (EVEN THOUGH YOU SHOULD!). If you only have 1 or 2 bottles then pick up a gallon (or 2 :)) of water at the grocery store and leave it in the car for refills. We will be stopping at least at 1 gas station store, and as many as 3 of them are available to us if needed.
Here is why this ride is even better though....you'll be surrounded by others who will have plenty of food and water in case you "run out", or get into a spot of trouble.
Personally this is what I would bring - I probably would only eat about half of this as well...:
31 route: 2 bottles (1 large 1 regular), 2 gels (just in case)
62 route: 4 bottles (all regular size, 2 with sports drink 2 water), 2 gels, "energy bar", sandwich(maybe)
*I would probably ony eat 1 or 2 gels, and that's it*
100 route: 6-7 bottles worth of fluid - 2-3 sports drink the rest water, sandwich(s), cliff blocks, 2-3 gels
I will probably bring more to have on hand in case someone is a little short.
BTW - this one is going to probably be even flatter than aham's....(trying to stir up a "how flat is this route" competition)
Psimet - Appreciate the info. I hear what you're saying about kicking myself. Thinking about it and laying the groundwork at home. Thanks again.

I think I may be able to find a roller or two, but that is it. There is this nice little 1/2 mile roller and then a nice little short steep roller over by the Fox River. Of course, the route likely will head down towards Morris which means crossing I-80 so we get the dreaded overpass climbs. Oh, life in the Midwest!!! Later.
This is gonna be cool.
