Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Could someone go to jensonusa.com and find the correct cable set i would need for a set of front and rear avid mechanicals? I want to order them, but i haven't got the slightest idea of what i need as far as cables to install the discs on my 03' stumpjumper FSR. I would appriciate it :D
Thanks......
Won't they help you out if you call them?

the good thing about avids is you can use your current v-brake and cables for them. You dont need to get anything except fot the disc brakes themselves. Avids will work with any lever and cable
Well I'm not 100% sure on this :D Great huh LOL But I'm pretty sure these are the ones you want avid Mech cables (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=06315)
Would you mind ordering me a set of the mechs too?? COme on there cheap enough :) I'd need the cables too as well as some new brake levers:D :D

Not sure that you need the specific Avid mech cables. The way I understood it, your setup could remain completely stock except for the brakes themselves. The site says that the brakes come with a cable seal to keep thyem from being contaminated. A set of XTR brake cables and housings like these from Shimano (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=06050/) would work well, if I understand what is compatible with the system. Cables and housing are not a place to go cheap on a bike that is used often. They make a big differece. As far as I know, you don't need any special lengths of cable for the Avids. A few regular lenths of cable should work fine.

Edit: There is a help section below each item when it is clicked on. I have asked a question using this feature before, and while the response is very short, they seem to answer the question well enough. If you want to, go ahead and try it.
dazco you can use normal V-brake cables but you'll need longer housings as they will have to reach all the way from the lever to the brake in the front and from the cablestay on the top tube to the brake in the rear.
I'm sorry !!! I really am......after asking this i went to my LBS to get a floor pump and ended up talking to the mechanic for about a 1/2 hour about brakes. He convinced me the way to go is hydro. He didn't even have the ones he recommended in stock, and from that and his attitude i believe he was being honest with me. One of those guys who just loves to talk bikes, and seemed sincere.
Then he showed me a few bikes with mechanical and hydros. That covinced me beyond anything anyone tells me !! They hydros were far far FAR more powerfull, which is what i need. The mechanical felt less powerfull than my V's !
In any case, i AM convinced, which leads to more dilemmas.........which hydro?! He swears by the Magura Julie as THE best hydro disc system on a budget. $229 for the set (front and back and all hardware) if i buy it there, probably about $30 less online. He said hayes (sp?) are better, but not nearly enough to justify the cost. Sounded like he felt they were close, and he said the Magura Julie is very powerful. Any thoughts on this?
I was close to just telling him to order me a set, but i figured i'd consult you guys and look at the reviews first. Reviews seem good. By the way, the newer sets have alloy levers, not plastic as some reviews mention.

Magura Julie as THE best hydro disc system on a budget. $229
If you have that much you should get Hayes Hydros. Much more powerful and reliable then the julies and will run you $199 for the entire set. Magura makes a good brake but if you want power and only have 200 bucks then the Hayes are the way to go. The only Maguras with a lot of power would be the Gustavs and those run about $250 a wheel.
I didn't know i could get Hayes for 2 bills. I keep hearing $400, and figured the cheaper ones weren't too good since no one seems to mention them. What model are these and where did you see them for $200?
I'll look into them..........Thanks

My next recomendation would be to save an extra $75 and buy some Hope Minis. they sell for $150 per wheel from most shops. They have more power then you will need, great modulation and have a nice finish to them. They are a XC system but i have used my wife's bike on some dh runs and they worked great ( I weigh 270lbs) with out fading. If you can wait until Monday night I can let you know about the Hayes.

Hey,
Good call on going with Hydraulics. I went through that delima a while ago and w/o a doubt ended up getting some Hope Mini's. Those Magura Julies are supposed to be pretty good. I havent ever heard anything bad about Magura's except for not too long ago they used to use a fluid which heated easily, but that's solved now.
The thing is i'd go ahead and get something that your mechanic is familiar with because in the end if you cant figure something out he'll be familiar enough with the system to pinpoint the problem. Other than that i feel with Hydraulic brakes that Modulation is the most important aspect because you know they're going to stop you quickly, the modulation is what seperates the good ones from the bad ones.
Oh ya, hayes are nice but i think they're over rated
Ok guys, go ahead........confuse me some more. :D
(by the way...hope is out of the question...too much $)
What mechanical did he show you? Because being less powerful makes NO SENSE what-so-ever. (My Avid mechs destroy the V's on my other bike.) That could possibly have been a ploy to get you to buy the hydro's (more queso for their till). As far as hydro's go Hayes are the standard by which all others are judged
Not sure, but they were on a specialized of some sort i think. I rolled the bike forward and felt that when i applied the brake they were pretty weak compared to when i do that with my V's. Then i felt a hydro (shimano i think) and it was like you could just blow on the lever and it would do an endo. It was nite and day, and i really don't think he was selling me, just showing me what he believed.....that hydros are far more powerful. In any case, it floored me because the difference was probably 90% more power in the hydros. (ok, maybe not 90%, but a he|| of a lot)The avid mechs may be good for what they are, but the mountains i have around my house are extremely steep, and going down those roads you can be going 5 MPH, let go of the brakes and accelerate as tho you're on a motorcycle!! I need the most power i can get with absolute minimal hand strength. With my V brakes i get a 1/2 mile down the fireroad and my hands are in pain. And even if avid mechs are literally 2 or 3 times as poweful as the mechs i checked out today, they'd be much too little for me. It's not stopping power i need. My V's have plenty. It's being able to get that stopping power with one finger.

I'd recommend getting the Magura's, and buy them from that shop. Always good to support the LBS. With that said, I'm running Hayes Hydros Mag's and I doubt I'd ever switch to another brand. And yep, they're $400 for the set!

I got the Hayes too. Couldn't pass em up for $99 apiece OEM. Pre-bled and cut to length. (measured my bike and the hoses will afford a couple inches of safety margin) They threw in the rear adapter free, and the front will fit my manitou fork w/o adapter. So it should be a quick and easy instal being pre-bled and all.
I don't know how good they are compared to other Hayes, but they normally are $199 each list. But i called Jensonusa and they said they're cheap because they bought a load of bikes from a manufacturer i don't recall, and parted them out. They had the same Hayes in a retail box that they normally sell for $180 or somewhere around there. But they are older models. Last years from what he said. Gotta be decent brakes at any rate. The maguras probably aren't as good, but at any rate i paid the same for the Hayes as the Maguras would have cost me.
