Recumbent - My Feet Hurt

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
After years of cycling in sandals, I decided to try clipless pedals again. I picked Eggbeater Pedals and Shimano MT-20D shoes (After years of cycling in sandals, I decided to try clipless pedals again. I picked Eggbeater Pedals and Shimano MT-20D shoes.).
The pedals seem fine but the shoes are killing my feet. Yesterday I had to turn back after 10 miles. The shoes do not seem to disperse the stress from the clips very well. The shoe is comfortable but even when walking I can feel the clip pressing hard against my foot.
Did I just pick a bad shoe? No one would ever ride with this level of discomfort. I have used clipless pedals
before SPD and Time and did have this much trouble.
Should I look for inserts or just find another pair of shoes? The Shoes look very well made.
Can anyone recommend a comfortable light mountain shoe?
Thanks ... Roland
Yeah, it could be the shoe. Some have a stiffer sole than others. In your case, a stiff sole is very important because the "footprint" of the Eggbeater is so small.
I use a pair of Cannondale MTB cycling shoes, and I could walk in them for hours without discomfort (though I never would, I'd ride instead!). I only get mild foot numbness while riding (a known recumbent issue); it takes about 30-40 minutes before it sets in. Even stiffer soles would probably eliminate the problem.

I have eggbeaters and Answer mountain shoes that were in a combo deal on Nashbar.
They work fine, and my feet feel good at the end of the ride.
Many say the "platform" is the stiff sole of your shoe, not the surface area of the pedal.

Why don't you split the difference--use Shimano sandals with the clipless pedals. I do and recommend the combo to all my customers. You can leave the straps comfortably loose and keep the comfort you are used to. Add socks if it's cold.
