Foo - I'm in a bad funk

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm in a bad funk. It sucks I can't seem to get myself out. Help me out my foo buddies.
Go look at my pic in the How ugly are you thread... You'll feel better instantly
Poor snowy. :( I don't know what's going on, but I hope things get better soon.

Yeah, this is a story of a famous dog
For the dog that chases its tail will be dizzy
These are clapping dogs, rhythmic dogs
Harmonic dogs, house dogs, street dogs
Dog of the world unite
Dancin' dogs
Yeah
Countin' dogs, funky dogs
Nasty dogs (Dog)
Atomic dog
Atomic dog
Like the boys
When they're out there walkin' the streets
May compete
Nothin' but the dog in ya

Thanks foosters. Stacey thats not a bad pic, I'm not photogentic (sp?) either.
Here is my problem I'm just grouchy for really no reason. I guess the biggest reason is I feel like I'm just average. Average phyiscally, mentally, etc. Get what I am saying? But I notice it more when I'm biking. My bf races mountain bikes, and its very challegening for me at times. What makes it hard is when he'll go riding with people and tell me how good they are. He is not trying to be mean but he says it and I take offense to it. I just want to be good too and my fear gets the best of me.

You need some of this medicine, first a long bike ride. Go up north Boulder, Ft Collins, then come back for an afternoon of this!!

snowy, the thing is - we're all average. Errrrr, I mean, we're all SPECIAL and different, just like everyone else! Or something. . .
Whatever it is that's bothering you, keep in mind that there are certainly things you're really good at. And if other people are better at biking, so what - chances are, you're better than all of them at something else. As long as you're enjoying your biking (and I know you are based on your other posts here), that's all that matters.
I used to get really, really tied up in a lot of "hobby" type things about whether or not I was better than other people in to that same thing, or wether or not I had better "stuff" than them to do the hobby with. I soon realized that, often, the people that are best or have the best stuff are usually either a) just plain gifted, or b) making a TON of sacrifices elsewhere in their lives.
In case A, I'm trying my best to just be happy for those people. Sooner or later, I'll find my own case A. In case B, I have to realize that I'm just plain not willing to make those sacrifices. Sure, Joe Schmoe might be faster than me on a bike, but I don't spend 40 hours a week training like he does - that time is way too valuable to me, and I'd rather spend it somewhere else.
It's all about a balance, I guess.

I know that I'm terribly average and probably below average is some things. I try to push myself to be a little faster, a little better, small personal victories.

you're biggest fear and handicap is wanting something and wishing for something and not making it happend. If you can imagine what you want to be then you can make it happend.
that's the difference between I wish I was and I am.
Im not preaching, I lived it.
There was a time I would look at certain people I admired and said I wish I could, fortunatly I had a friend who believe that I could, just that little boost until I saw for myself that I could, made me succeed into saying, I am now what I had wished I could be. It's not a world changing goal but it changed my world to know that in anything you do if you can see it, you can do it.
And... I dont know you but only from what you post, you are not avarage, you speak your mind and ideas that only YOU have, you do not go with the general concessus just to fit in, and that is being above average.
What makes it hard is when he'll go riding with people and tell me how good they are. He is not trying to be mean but he says it and I take offense to it. I just want to be good too and my fear gets the best of me.
Remember how good you felt after the camp you did a couple of weeks ago? You felt good because you were able to do the things you thought you couldn't. Keep pushing, it may come in small increments, but you'll get better, faster and stronger everytime you go out, if you keep pushing your limits.
I was SO impressed by you when we rode the Santa Fe Century, you were new to road biking and hammered that hard century in fine fashion, far ahead of the average riders on the ride!!
Actually, we all like you so much because you're above average in every way!

Lol this is why I race traffic in the city safely. :p Its an instant ego booster and its nice to hit 30 mph and have somebody pull along side of you and smile and then slowly take off.

I've never ridden with you, but you'd probably smoke me.;) Anyway, aren't you a badass paralegal manager type person that got a bonus some people don't even make in a year? Not that money's that important. It's the recognition that matters. I, and a lot of others here, recognize the fact that you're a great person.:D

Yeah Snowy, we all have our strengths and weaknesses.
One of my greatest weaknesses is a rather weak cardiovascular system. I've always contered it though with muscle, which is pretty easy for me to build.
I also feel like a moron at times, but everyone else says otherwise....they tell me I make them fell dumb, somehow I just don't see that happening, considering how many times I forget what I am trying to type or say, while trying to say it.
Just keep in mind you do have strengths, it's just after a while, we all take our strengths for granted. Go out and enjoy the ride for what it is Snowy, a good time with your guy and the great outdoors :)
I guess the biggest reason is I feel like I'm just average. Average phyiscally, mentally, etc.
typical; common; ordinary: The average secretary couldn't handle such a workload. His grades were nothing special, only average.
So what's wrong with average? The way i see it, you are better than those that are below average, and they are about half of the population.

Awwww we all feel this way sometimes! There will always be people who will do things better than I do them, and instead of beating myself up because I have not reached their skill level yet, I try to focus on the parts that I am really good at, and take more incentive to work harder to get better. There was a time in my life when I was not as active as I am now, and things that I do now would have been extremely difficult for me back then. Keep working hard, and you will see a progression. Besides...you should be riding for yourself...and not for other people. :)
Awww, Telenick how is fatherhood treating you?? She is cute.
Shadiyah, your right. I guess I just loss what I was riding for. I have a goal in mind but I have to remind myself that I'm riding for me and that is all that really matters.
See without you all and your great reminders its easy to lose your perspectative. THANKS :)

I know that many people sort of bump about hoping to find happiness. I don't think one person's answer is going to work for everyone. By the time someone is an adult, they have probably had enough life experiences that they can do this exercise though.
Think back and write down the happiest moments you can recall from life. After writing these things down, see if you spot any patterns. Finally, compare what things are different in your life now than they were when you were happiest. Hopefully, this will trigger some thoughts on what is different that's impeding your happiness.
I wish you the best with breaking out of the present mood - both of you, snowy and MsVicki. :D

In a funk eh?, go spend time with family and friends. Go bowling or do something to make you feel better.
Don't worry about being in a funk. My father likes to say that "only the mediocre are always at their best". Sounds like things are looking up already. Hope you continue to find reasons to feel better!

if this will make you feel better,
on a montain bike,1) my back wheel always slides,
2) I scream like a girl "Im not going to make it" every minute
3) when there is a hill, I throw my bike down and run up it swaering like a truck driver the whole time
4)when there is a down hill, I fly over the handle bars
5) when there is a tree root on the path, see # 4
out of your funk yet? ( and this is ALL true, Ill stick to road biking)
OMG BDG, your too much. :)
I do feel lots better. :)

Aww man, BDG, if I lived closer, I would show you the fine art of mountain bike riding :)
It's fun, seriously. The key is controlling your center of balance. If you ever walked a balance beam or similar, you are part of the way there already.
Of course terrahugging happens. Despite what you think, the ground is hugging you back, it's just not as cuddly as one would hope :p
Yes mountain biking is fun. Although at times it can be painful too. :) I'll tell you I much rather fall on the dirt then the road.
BDG, I scream like a girl too lots :)

St. Petersburg? Mountain biking? Not saying it isn't possible, but you have to admit, it isn't the most likely of combinations.

Sure, there aren't 3500' climbs, but lots of rooty, tight twisty singletrack, and short but steep ups and downs. It takes some skeelz... (This from living in Orlando whay back)
