A young man that volunteers with me at the bike library is ordering a headset for his Miyata 710 fixie... mid-80s. My guess is Campy not JIS. Anyone know for certain before he orders?

If I knew what was in there, I wouldn't be asking the question. I don't have access to the bike... this is a remote diagnosis.

I would think that Miyata, being a Japanese company, would use the Japanese standard (JIS). Other than that, no idea.

Campy has British threaded HS's also. As far as I know Japanese Bikes use British threading.

Wait, let's clarify: are you asking what crown race diameter he will need? (JIS being 27mm and ISO/everythingelseexceptBMX being 26.4) Or are you asking what threading the HS will use, cause that's easy: it will be BSC, same as JIS. If question #1, I couldn't say for sure, I haven't worked on this very model/year Miyata and with a JP bike you never can tell, but I'd bet it's 26.4. Strictly a guess, I just reckon Miyata made so much for export that they probably opted for a more user-friendly HS crown race when shipping overseas. He should just order his from a source that will let him swap for the correct size, if need be.

Now I should clarify just a little, for 1" headsets JIS standard for ID of crownrace is 27mm, and 26.4mm is crownrace ID foreverythingelse INCLUDING BMX, I was thinking about the OD of BMX headset components, which are larger than those used for road bikes or old school Mtn. bikes.

FWIW: My Miayata 710 has a Tange Industries threaded headset and the person I bought the bike from said that it was a campy replica and could be rebuilt with campy parts.

I have seen both on Miyata. Before you ask, I have been unable to determine if there is a crossover related to a specific year or model level. You are just going to have to measure the old crown race to be sure.

Whichever has the smaller diameter crown race is NOT what was on my Triplecross (90, maybe) and WAS on my '87 312. I found this out when I tried to swap them......
