If I use my current surname (step dad adopted me at age 9): 8127
If I use my original surname (mom's maiden name):
<name>, as a surname, does not exist in this database, because it is not among the top 55,000 most common names in the US.

My surname comes in at 3413.

I wanted to find the most common. Okay, Smith is 1, Johnson is 2, Brown is 5. I wonder what 3 and 4 are.

Good example of just how much you can trust the accuracy.
First website rated my name at 81xx. That website, rated me at 69xx. Over 1000 rank points different.

Williams and Jones were my guesses right after Smith. They popped up as 3 and 4

What do you mean by "beat"?
Lower number means more common name....so I figure higher numbers are better.
smith is surname number 1 in the USA.

My surname is in the 8,000's, it is all lies. Only people that know us or someone with the same last name gets it right. No way could my surname be in the top quarter. Before caller ID, we could sniff out telemarketers with how they said our last name. Everytime I meet someone new it take three months to get them to say the name right. No way could my surname be in the top quarter.
