Have built a new MTB and want to build my Paramount MTB frame as a single-speed. Several questions:

- Is this a reasonable thing to do (why or why not0?
- Who makes good SS rear hubs. The one my LBS recommended cost more than my Campy Record rear hub. Anything reasonable you can recommend?
- Are their SS specific wheels available?

Thanks. Hope to see you on the boardwalks.

it's your bike, you're the one riding it. only you can answer that.

Who makes good SS rear hubs.
Surly, Chris King

they're gonna be more expensive, that's a given. these companies don't move nearly as many parts as campy or shimano does.

Are their SS specific wheels available?
there is one shop online i know of that'll sell you a SS wheel, though unfortunately i can't remember their address. there's no reason you can't have a bike shop build up a wheel for you though with whatever hub you choose.

Hope to see you on the boardwalks.
i'd hope to see you in the dirt moreso than on some silly little boardwalk :)

Webcyclery (http://www.webcyclery.com/.docs/category/60/category_name/Single+Speed+Wheelsets/pg/cat_search.html) has a page of single speed wheels.

Sheldon Brown over at Harris Cyclery (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/singlespeed.html#wheels) has some stock wheels, or will build you a set.

Building a single speed is probably never reasonable. Don't let that stop you.

Building a single speed is not unreasonable...building a fixie is. No good reason ever to have a fixie...which is exactly why you should do it.!!!!!!
