Cross Check vs X-ray

For kicks, let's just imagine that I could get a new Surly Cross Check complete bike (budget build) for $700. I could also get an Ibex X-ray for $600. (Mail order and self assembly required is not a big issue for me)

I'm familiar w/ the main differences between the two -- steel vs alum, bar ends vs sora brifters, tiagra vs sora etc. But without an intimate first hand knowledge of some of the other components - wheels, headsets, BBs , brakes, etc. I just can't effectively do the mental algebra to figure out which is a better deal.

Those of you with a longer history in cx might know better than me- so I'd appreciate any input.

First, I do not own a Cross Check yet; I just orderd one from edinabike; it should be here today. As such, I'm not a 'real' owner, but I have just been through the decision process.

You can get a Surly Cross Check complete at Edinabike.com for approx. $745 including S/H. That being said, everything I have read (or heard from the LBS) about Surly is positive. People love it's ride, versatility, handling, quality, etc. It can be used for CX, commuting, touring, JRA, etc. The only downside potentially is weight. I am not a weight weanie, however, as I could stand to lose 20 pounds myself (it seems the more I cycle, the more I eat).
