I moved to the SF Bay Area 3 years ago, and it seems like everybody is on a bike on the weekends. I'm an avid runner and full-time student, so it took time for me to get into the cycling game. A year and a half riding an old Bianchi (80's model?) I bought from a friend on campus led me to save up and invest in a new bike. I've been riding a 2006 Trek 5200 for about a week! I climb like a champ, and bomb downhills without fear of dry-rot pistol grips fluttering up the (nearly useless) brake cables at me, or taking a turn too sharp and fighting death wobble. Fortunately, riding a double with only 6 cogs on the rear cassette in Marin county has made me pretty strong on the hills. Looking forward to finally doing a few of Northern California's more famous rides with a bike I have confidence in. I've been acquiring "junk" bikes from friends, too. I'd like to learn some basic repair skills. I think it would be quite useful and helpful to get others out the door that are too lazy to get out on a bike they aren't confident riding because of lack of upkeep.
