Advocacy & Safety - Wrong way bicycle cop

I was in my car doing some errands, when I see a bike cop going the wrong way on a street perpendicular to the one I'm driving on?! He certainly was not in emergency mode. After he crossed the street I was driving on, he kept going the wrong way for about 50-100 yards, then got on the right side of the street.

Great example.

edit-Forgot to add, he was going the wrong way across the intersection of two divided 4 lane streets.

they do it all the time here in NYC. Sidewalks, wrong way, you name it. of course they are only on their bikes when it is not too hot, not too cold, not raining, not snowing, not blowing. Fairweather bikers to say the least.

in other news, i saw a cop speeding today.

Gee, the only cops I see are at the Krispy Kreem.

dsc113, they do that ALLLL the time up here in Albany, too. I think I know where ours got trained. :P Of course a good third of the Albany PD is full of guys who're just pissed that they failed the NYPD exam anyway.

I saw them all training here riding down the right side of the sidewalk, wrong direction, taking the whole thing up on a nice summer day and expecting everyone to move. When they rode by I had to toss in my, "Hey boys, I figured you would've known this was the wrong side." They didn't like that much...

I see this all the time in Philly too. They ride their decked out Trek mountain bikes about 5 miles an hour in the wrong direction half the time, and on the sidewalk the other half of the time.

I've had fantasies about being a bike cop, though. I mean, getting paid by the government to ride? Hells yes.

But I'd have to cut my hair to do it, so no.

I met a rather friendly bike cop in Atlanta this year on a path. Good place to have a bike cop, but I didn't see him out there long. I guess they only post police on the path if problems are reported.

On another note, the only thing I don't get is wearing a dark blue uniform on a bike in the summer. Dang, they ought to dress them in a cooler uniform (no pun intended.) That uniform has got to be hot, hot, hot!

I hate to say it, but I've had some strange experiences with police being nice, but also just not knowing the law about bicycling. Shakes me up a bit.

While walking around in donwtown Chicago, I've often nearly been hit from behind by bike-mounted officers riding on the sidewalk. But then I've also been out riding and have seen groups of two and three riding w/ traffic t on more residential streets, even stopping at all the stop signs, and waving hello as we passed each other. I've seen bike cops who've stopped and helped civilian cyclists who were having some sort of mechanical difficulty. But then there's also the incident about two months back when I was walking over by the IIT campus and I saw a bike cop crash in the middle of the street when his back wheel slid out of the dropouts: I ran over and checked to make sure he was okay, which he was, and then helped him check for any damage to the bike - turns out he didn't know how to properly close the quick release and that's what had done him in.

To get to my point: as with most other things, it varies wildly from individual to individual. My guess is that either the training (both in terms of law and basic mechanical skills) is either fairly light and the more self-motivated individuals take charge of learning things on their own time, or the training is adequate and some folks just don't care to pay attention or really observe the law.

I was riding my bike home from the LBS yesterday in rush hour. A motorcycle officer in front of me (who had been riding slowly ~30mph, no lights) came up behind the very long line of cars backed up at intersection and drove up on the sidewalk and continued passed the 1/2mi line of cars. I stayed in line and waited as the sidewalk is quite rough with many intersections for alleys, driveways, sidestreets (about 1 every 25yrds or so)

Of course Krispy Kremes has no match. They all go to Tim Horton's, because the coffee chain was founded by a police officer (and a Hockey Player).

In calgary, bicycle cops are permitted to ride on sidewalks and down a popular promenade closed to other cyclists.

Hear hear! The Krispy Kremes died here too. Horrid spelling, donoughts that taste like sugar ****, and a real coffee chain killed them off.

cops and their vehicles are considered emergency vehicles and as such can prettymuch do what they want
