Triathlon - Why/How is a tri bike different then a road bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is so special about tri specific bikes as compared to road bikes? Comfort? speed? If they are better at these things then why doesnt everyone just use them. To me it just looks like they have different bars. Any info for me (im a noob) would be great. Thanks

Several minor differences. Use the search function, there are MANY threads started on this very subject.

The big differance is that in cycling, you depend on the guy in front of you to cut the wind for you. Drafting is a major part of cycle racing.
In triathlon, you are not allowed to draft (with few exceptions in some races) so therefor you have to do all your own work. The aero-position allows you to cheat the wind. In the aero-position, you lower your upper body, which in turn moves you further forward.
Therefor, tri bikes usually have the rider more forward, and in a lower position. Also, this geometry is somewhat less stable because you are resting on your elbows or lower arms. Most group rides frown upon riding in the aero position.
