Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - New forum: Clydesdales!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think if you "work" your way out of being a Clyde you can remain an honorary member.

Great idea. As a perma clyde (6'00" @ 280 aiming to get down to 230ish) it is great to see a forum for us uber riders.

I asked this elsewhere, but is there an Athena sub-forum for women or is that in the uber-restricted Women's forum?
I was afraid of this, I got down to 245 and was thinking what if Joe started a forum and had a limit on weight, just the thought of it caused me to start drinking and eating more and I'm proud to say I'm back up to 265.

Hi there. I'm a 5'9" - 165# Athena and haven't seen anything in the Women's Forum. In the introduce yourself Clydesdale thread I only noticed a couple women. I guess we don't out ourselves as easily as you guys. We also don't have too many equipment issues ... I fit nicely between a regular Men's size M & L in most things. It's my big German (heritage) bones and square shaped body that helps! Anyway, I'm an Athena to stay. I swim and bike and am probably only about 10 lbs overweight. I'd be ill if I slipped under 150#.
Congrats guys on your new sub-forum. I'll peek in now and then to see if there's a flare-up of Athena activity over here.

I'll say hello at 214lbs (down from 240) and hopefully "goodbye" within a couple of months.
Personally, I have never made any changes due to my weight. Same bikes, same wheels, same jerseys, same whatever.
It all works for me.

This is terrific news! I'm thrilled to have a forum just for us big guys. I don't think we'll run out of threads anytime soon.

Again, thanks for this forum. I am 6'3" and 215 lbs. There certainly are a number of legitimate concerns for us larger riders, as much of the new products on the market are aimed at those emaciated skinny folk.:)

Well, I only fit Joe's definition of a Clyde when I've been over eating for a week, and wear heavy hiking boots, but this sub-Forum is still a good idea.
Too many bikes and bike products in every price range are designed to suit a 150 pound pro rider, who rides on the smoothest of roads. For those of us who weigh closer to 200 pounds, and ride on roads that look like those in Berlin in 1946,"sturdier" bikes, wheels, and components are essential. As is a good place to discuss which of those components are worthwhile purchases, and which are not.
Just noticed this...
I guess it's true what they say: "Good things come to those who weight"

I haven't been below 200 since wrestling season my freshmen year of high school. I've been a steady 245 for the past few years, high of just under 270 when I played college football. I don't think I'll ever be under 200 again, but I'm sure I can get close...

6'6" and an eighth of a ton. (Just a little bit over that at 260, actually.) :D
Outside of catastrophic illness or amputation, there's no way I'll drop below the 200 pound mark. I watch what I eat, I ride 15 miles r/t to work 4 days a week, hike or go rock climbing on the weekends, and I'm hard pressed to even hit the 250 pound mark... and I'm fine with this.
As long as I can still find 36-h/4-cross wheels, I'm a happy man.
//Aren't guys my size supposed to be jolly?
Figures...I'm not an official clyde any more. I'm still a ways from a good healthy weight though, so can I be here on an honorary basis?

I've been bugging for a Clydesdale forum since I first came to BF.
I'm probably the biggest Clydesdale in here at over 300#. :p

I am glad to discover this new thread. I am also one of those women who could lose a few pounds. When I go into the stores to buy cycling clothes I automatically go to the men's section because I know they are more likely to fit me. Any information I can get from this thread is greatly appreciated.
Gas, the price of a can of beans.
I hadn;t seen this forum yet. I am SIKED:D
I am 5'4" @ 240# (down from 310) - hope to drop some lbs this winter - haven't been riding lately - got clipped by a truck in July (nothing too serious but my courage was bruised a bit)
I know it isn't an excuse but it scared me the bejezzus out of me and it took a month or better to get back out on the road. Back in saddle happy to say and looking to lose!:)

First and foremost....for larger women's clothing, you MUST go to www.aerotechdesigns.com to buy your stuff. I've been using them since I started and they are THE BEST!!! Excellent quality...the people have made Olympic Uniforms for teams in the past. The cater to big men/women cycle clothing.

As a European completely unfamiliar with the term, I thought you were talking about 91+ kg bikes.
I even looked through this forum and started seeing some racing style bikes, came to the conclusion "Oh well, they must have filled the frame with lead or some exotic super heavy alloy, but what's the point?!"

Well, I certainly have Clyde feet - I wear a size 51 S SIDI. Otherwise, I'm 6'6" 215 lbs - down from 245 lbs this time last year.

Thanks for thinking of this!

I'm also glad to find this forum - thanks!
I'm currently 5'10", 214. Started at 5'10" (imagine that!) 282 in Feb '04. Got on the bike again in Jan '06 at around 225. Most of my miles are commute - 30 mile RT, with the (very) occasional weekend ride squeezed in. Have put around 2000 miles on my bikes this year - first on a '99 Rockhopper (rigid) with slicks, and the last 1000 on my '85 Trek 4xx (450, 460? can't really tell...) that I hadn't ridden since I got my driver's license in '86. The weight is coming off VERY slowly now, but I'm hoping someday soon to leave the ranks.
Thanks again for this place!

Welcome!
Hi, Just joined the list. I was looking for larger sized, loose, padded bike shorts. I'm 63 and way too heavy. My V/A Dr. in his East Indian accent told me to exercise or die. So I'll walk until the spring thaw and then back on my old Trek 7600. I"m 6' and over 300 so I qualify for my Clydesdale status.;-).I'll check the sponsers and see if I can find some shorts. Regards from Western NM,Bill

Bill,
As a fellow Clyde, may I suggest bib shorts? When you go to the larger sized shorts, they tend to run a little long...like they were made for someone a little taller than us ( I am also 6'). Shorts in our size tend to have a crotch that is way too low. The bibs tend to fix the problem and keep you from having a crotch halfway down your thigh. OK, maybe they're not that low, but you get the idea, :)
Juan
