i just won a pair of vintage diadora cycling shoes with cleats on e bay. am i correct in assuming the cut out in the cleat just slides over the back of the pedals? i've never had cycling specific shoes before, and i want to make sure i'm setting them up right so i don't kill myself. thanks in advance.

Yup. You will need some pedals of the appropriate type.

Something like these - $30 at Nashbar? I hope they work with rat-trap pedals like I have for my vintage bike.

yup they'll work.
takes a bit of getting used to, not quite as easy to master as
clipless but I still use them on 3 of my bikes.

I used a pair of Detto Pietros (sp?) leather road shoes for years before I wore them out. They had the old style leather sole with steel shank insert. The newer Dettos had a hard plastic sole that will last much longer and the cleats bolted on instead of being nailed in place. You will enjoy these shoes a bunch, I'm sure, but be sure to loosen the toe-strap before you come to a stop! It is embarassing to fall over at a stop sign because your foot won't come out.
Also, it's a good idea to treat them with a little neatsfoot oil once in a while.
Best wishes!
