Greetings,

Later this year I plan to start commuting to work. I can't do it now because I have to drop my stepson off at school each morning.

Lately I've been a little research for lights and wondered if anyone made a light that mounts to the stem instead of the bars. Seems the stem would be a good place to mount the light so that it doesn't take up room on the bars.

Thanks in advance for any leads.

Zack,
I don't know of any made to mount on the stem but here is what I did and it is working fine.
I have an older bike with a 1" threaded headset. It came with a bracket to hold the front reflector that mounts to the stem under the top headset nut. I removed the reflector and added an 'L' bracket. My lights came as bar mount but had a bolt on the bottom that I attached to the 'L' bracket.
It's a jury rig that works for me. The light is off the bar but still turns with the bar.
If you have a newer bike, threadless headset, I'm not sure if those brackets are available. If so, make sure the light you get has a bottom mount hole.
Just an idea.
Steve

Zack,
Here is a picture. Not a great pic but you can get the idea.

Check out the "Space Grip" at http://www.minoura.jp/acc-e.html. See the inset. I think this would work for what you want to do. My local LBS stocks 'em.

Zack, the space bars works for me and the only room it takes up is the space that a computer would, leaving the rest of the bar free. Nashbar has them on sale for $7.99. Item #MN-SGL

Thanks, everyone for the replies. Looks like the space grip is the way to go.

You can mount lamps on the crown of the fork, using the brake bolt. This is standard for dynamo style lamps and some reflectors.

If your bike was designed to have fenders there should be a mounting hole where the front forks join the stem. A light light could be mounted there. Big PAR36 headlight holders can be held onto the stem with pipe clamps. PAR36 headlights go up to 100 watts.

Or you can buy the HID light that attaches to the stem...

You can put a bar-mount light on your stem with this:

Zack,

Have you thought of making your own lighting system? I read the Geek thread and made my own... couldn't be happier with it. and, best of all... it's personalized to my taste, somewhat.
