Hello All. Just won a lot of suntour derailurs on ebay. I had orginally bought it to replace a suntour VGT rear that was rusted, but when the lot showed up, some of the other models seemed a bit nicer/lighter. So here goes:

Suntour GT rear
Suntour V-GT Luxe rear
Suntour Cyclone M-II rear
Suntour Cyclone M-TT front
Suntour SL Front

I was leaning toward the cyclone because it seemed the lightest, but the V-GT luxe seems like a bit more of a workhorse. Any opinions (okay stupid question), anyway, which is better? Thanks.

If you need absolute reliability over a wide freewheel range, go with the V-GT family. Yes, they weigh a bit more than the others, but if you're talking a long haul tourer, or serious touring cycle, reliability trumps weight anytime. I've got a basic steel V-GT, and a Compe-V front sitting in the parts box as we speak, waiting for the day that I decide the Raleigh is finally going to get a wider gearset than the Campy Gran Spoort can handle.

On two of my touring bikes I run:
Front: SUNTOUR Compe-V
Rear: SUNTOUR V-GTluxe

They get the job done.

The Cyclone series SunTours are my favorites, although I concur that the good old V-Luxe and its wide-range cousin, the V-GT Luxe, work extremely well. The SL and the Spirt fronts are interesting, if you like a normal-high shift pattern (both front and rear levers back = low gear; both forward = high gear).

So I tried the cyclone, but oddly enough it didn't go wide enough for my 5 speed cluster??? Probably because my axel is on the long side. Could try a shorter axel, but the V-GT luxe went on and work fine, so far...

I have a SunTour Edge 7sp group on a Schwinn Prelude. The painted finish reminds me of the old Shimano 600 group when it was painted. It works but is nothing special.
