Southern California - SFVBC remote ride this morning

So at the start of this ride, I was planning on doing the 28 mile "lakes tour" route, but everybody decided to do a different route and I couldn't hear what the route or mileage was. No biggie, I use to live in Agoura and could find my way back if they go too far. However, poor Vance had come with his single speed since the lakes tour didn't have any major climbs.

Of course they take us over Potrero and Vance toughed it out out of the saddle and 30 rpm up that sucker. On the valley floor, he gets a flat and we find out that his 3 year old tube has bonded with the tire! Fast forward 10 minutes we have finally removed and replaced the tube and don't know where the club was going. No matter, I told him I could make this into a 30 mile loop but the other side of the valley had a short but killer climb. Vance did it! The rest of the ride was smooth sailing compared to that.

Mad props to Vance, what a trooper on what seemed to be equivilent to my 50/19 gear!

Damn! Better told him to take enough electrolytes, or he's gonna cramp up tonight!

Hey guys, Brian is just being exceedingly kind to the new guy. And he was very kind on the ride, as well... helping me change the tire, and surely preventing me from getting permanently lost!

From my brief first exposure, SFVBC seems like a great group. I can't wait to ride with them again. I thought about tomorrow, but my thighs are a little jellified right now. ;)

I'm starting to wonder if riding a single speed or a fixed gear would be a good thing on flat to moderate rollers, because it seemed to motivate him to climb faster in order to keep the revs up (aside from the monster climbs, of course). Or he might just have stronger legs than me.

Everyone seems to be flatting in Hidden Valley lately. When I ride through there, I always hope to get out cleanly!

I rode with friends Agoura to Calabasas and back via Mulholland. My buddy flatted on the uphill.

Note for you on Hidden Valley exiting towards Newbury Park: As you come down the hill, you may have seen a bit of water on the road going through a left hand sweep. It's there almost year round and is slimy. One of our group tacoed a wheel there last month sliding out. Also, I heard that a rider died after losing control on that spot.

Hey Sheldon... not a fixie, just a beater, parts-bin single speed that I'm using to get back in shape. I don't feel like I've "earned" right to dust off the real road bike, yet. :)

And let me say again how excited I am about the SFVBC!

There's a fixie side to his rear wheel, with a gear on it and everything. We just gotta talk him into trying it (not going down Potrero though!)

The water wasn't there this time, but I remember it. I always take corners slowly anyway, because I'm not in a race and road rash sucks.
