Nothing crazy exciting as I'm still somewhat a newbie and have yet to rack up the amazing climbing/century/pie/etc. stories you guys have.

I've been riding this trail for the past few days and thought I'd lug around my camera this morning on my ride and snap some pics. The San Gabriel River Trail starts at the base of the foothills in Azusa (Hwy 39) and runs all the way down to Seal Beach. I will refer to the section I ride as the "Upper" section, as I usually park my car at the Sante Fe Dam recreation area and ride up and back down (9 miles each way). Going up towards the mountains is obviously slower than descending, but there aren't any serious climbs except for the intermittent short hill/ramp/etc. The trail ends at a housing tract at the foot of Azusa Canyon, but there's usually a nice stream/river flowing through that makes for a relaxing break before turning back. I haven't ventured too far south yet into the mid-section as I've ridden it before with my mountain bike and there are some questionable areas (gang/transient activity).

Anyways, enough logistics. As I have to get out and back home before the commander and the lil munchkin awake from their beauty sleep, I arrived at just before 6 a.m. in time to catch daybreak. I commended myself over and over again for getting a pair of arm warmers the day prior as it was quite chilly out. Combined with the fact that due to a mysterious Asian gene, I have absolutely no hair on my arms. I appreciate that as a conversation starter and a way to get a female stranger to caress my arms in awe and wonder (during my single days), but on a chilly morning, I see it as minus a few points on the insulation scale.

On to the ride itself - a somewhat relaxing, unspectacular 36 miles (did the back/forth twice). There were a good number of riders out, some in their full-out race kits, but I felt no need to flex my competitive muscles due to self-awareness of my still-newbie/turtle status. Besides, they wouldn't see me as a threat with my running shorts hiding a pair of padded cycling boxers. (I have yet to be comfortable wearing the tighties - and no, it is not because of "packaging" issues) I did manage to drop a little boy on his Schwinn with tigers on it, as well as a good number of joggers and walkers, all of whom were unsuspecting. Call me the stealth dropper. Anyways, for those who are interested in numbers, 36.4 miles in 2h15m (not counting photo times) for a 16.2mph average.

Enough talk - let's see some pics.

Thankfully there's a wide shoulder on each side of the road - or else if one were to fall, they'd be plucking these suckers out for awhile . . .

This was right before I jumped back on the bike and bunny-hopped over the rocks into the river for a quick wash/dip before heading back. Or not. :p Thanks for reading - happy riding!!

Great shots Luwin! It's been long while since I've been on the SGRT. We used to ride it from Santa Fe Dam to Seal Beach, have lunch on Main Street, and return......made for a very nice day ride...:)

Gorgeous photos, Luwin. Injured wasn't kidding...what a treat - you have a nice eye. I've ridden that bike path many times, and nothing wrong with you putting in some miles there. No cars and you can hammer if you want (just watch out for debris in certain sections and the occasional pedestrian). Also, once you work your way up, getting a group together to start at Azusa and heading all the way to Seal Beach and back is a great ride. It's 76 ml rt and don't kid yourself, it's a slight uphill all the way back (very slight but enough that you will feel it eventually). In the winter it's cooler, so less of a sunscreen over usage issue and a more pleasant ride. You can have lunch at a cafe (name is alluding me at the moment) down at Seal Beach before heading back. Just don't order the grits, like I did on one of my past seal beach rides, and try riding back at any respectable pace. I got sick doing that :( And if you don't like the idea of 76 miles (yet), there is also a fast 50 out and back from Azusa as well.
Thanks for sharing the pics.

Were those shot with a digital camera?

If so, how do you get those super-saturated colors?

Or is there some photoshop filter-trickery going on there?

Either way, nice looking pics.

Hi Luwin,

Very nice shots. I really like the first shot of your bicycle on the trail. Great angle and composition.

Winter time is when I mix nature photography with cycling. During the summer it's all about bicycle racing:

Great pictures.

What's holding your bike up? I can see something but can't make out what it is.

Thanks for sharing your pix.

As it happens, I rode the SGR from Seal Beach to the gate at the top of the River path and back Sunday AM. I started early and got back about a half hour before you posted your pix. Ride through the beach sand at River's End Cafe and leave it at the gate at the top (well, metaphorically at least). Indeed a very nice morning for the loop....

Great pictures Luwin. I wish I could figure out the secrets off the great photagraphers on these forums. What camera are you using?

yes, fabulous pics! I actually meant to compliment you on your photography when you posted your car pics! Is that something you do professionally or is it a hobby? Either way, you have a great eye!

Thanks for sharing your ride report!

Nice!

I'm going to have to do that trail sometime soon. I've done the Santa Ana River Trail more than enough times.

First of all, thanks for all the positive comments, folks!!

And regarding the photo details, I do it for fun. The camera I use is a Canon G5. I would love to step up to a DSLR one day when my ability and needs call for one, but I am completely happy with the G5 for now. It gives me the flexibility of manual functions a DSLR has and allows me to shoot in RAW format when I need to, and I also have the ability to run different filters/zoom lenses as I see fit. It also allows me to use a Canon external flash (420EX) which I appreciate. I would love a DSLR to fire off multiple shots without the shutter lag, but that's something I can live with for now. Besides, going DSLR would be a big investment for me in terms of gear (body, lenses, bag, etc.) -

In terms of post-processing, I don't utilize Photoshop or other programs much. I usually do a few things to enhance the shot such as brightness/contrast and resizing, but try not to alter the original shot too much as to make it unrecognizable from the one imprinted in my memory. To make a long story short, I say that I don't depend on Photoshop much, but it's probably because I don't have a good knowledge/experience of it. ;)

And for the thing that's holding my bike up - it's actually an alloy bottle cage that I have supporting the pedal, and I also wedge a little rock by the tire so it won't turn/slip - my big fear is trying to set up for a picture, and hearing the grinding metal sound as the bike goes plop.

Hello,

I love your shots, it is interesting that a G5 can do the OOF areas so well, particulary for a crop sensored P&S camera.

We all know that 90% of photography is the photographer... I can get some awsome shots with my tiny DSC-T9 Sony, but the DOF will never be there - it takes my 1Ds to do that

Wow, nice pics! We've never done that end of the SGTrail. You should set up a SoCal ride for us slow people. Been down by the beach end but never the SantaFe side.

I don't know how slow you are but I doubt you will be slower than me & my boy:) The SG trail is our regular trail since me & my boy are really newbie into slightly serious biking. And this route is nice & safe from traffic for a little boy to ride & have some fun.

Wow, awesome pictures!! especially B/W photos, I used to do a lot of B/W street photos as a hobby many years ago. Wish I still have the time to do it now. My son & I are regulars at the Santa Fe Dam trails, but we have not got far down south yet for same reason like yours. When we pick up some speed, we'll look forward to riding with you guys. We were riding at Rosebowl this afternoon & it was hot compare to you 6 a.m. ride. Thanks for sharing .

Most of the problems on the SG River Trail are with single riders.. The Pico Rivera area can be a little sketchy but it is a pretty nice trail..
