Hello all. I just joined the site today. I am hoping to meet some like-minded bike freaks and get some advice. I am thinking about getting either a Trek 4300 or a Specialized Hardrock. I have owned 3 Wal-Mart P.O.S.'s in the last 3 years and have seen the error of my ways. Never again. The custom Schwinn touring Bike my grandfather gave me was stolen out of my garage a few months ago. So I am looking to get something not too expensive to get me back out there. Any input would be greatly appreciated!:D

I started with a Trek and have stayed. It's my personal preference. I now ride a women's specific Trek 1500. Nothing to ooh and ahh over, but it fits me like a glove and I love it. It isn't light, however, and I use it as my excuse for slow climbing. I'm not sure about the 4300, but it has to be lighter than what I'm riding. If you can afford it, consider the 5200 and up. Oh, and welcome (I didn't say that in my other post).:D

i have the women's hardrock and it works for me.... bought it cuz it wasn't too expensive (didn't know if i'd take to MTBing or not... if was more a bike to ride when the rain messed up the roads out here!) but i do OK with it! it's heavy... but i like it!
check out the mountain biking section the bikeforums, too... you'll get a LOT of info there!

Merider, the 4300 is a mt bike, and trust me it is heavier then your 1500. The Trek is a decent bike as is the Rockhopper. Personally, I prefer Trek for road and specialized for dirt.

I went with the Hardrock as well, and the wife has a matching one in a smaller size. We opted for the entry-level Hardrock Sport, as the frame is solid, the components are decent, and the stock V-brakes were strong to not really warrant a step up to the Hardrock Disc. I figured I'd beat on this bike for a few years, and if I wanted to upgrade to a higher line altogether (probably full suspension - Stumpjumper FSR, etc.) - I'm not familiar with the Trek, but I can vouch for the Specialized. It is a solid bike, and as the new 07's just came out, you probably even get to decide if you want to spring for those or a carryover 06.
Best of luck to your search!

I just wanted to say thanks again to all of you before i bail out and go play half life. I put up a post in the mtb area, and was basically told that for what I want (fitness pavement rides/ some trails) the trek is probably a better bet. I keep looking at pictures of it on the trek site. I need a bike bad. Gotta wait 2 weeks til I get paid though. Ah well. Good day to all.

You've not ridden my trek. ;) Thanks for the clarification, and now I realize I had nothing to offer him. I'm always just thinking road as I don't do trails (on wheel anyway).
