Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wow. I didn't know about this one, and I live in Redlands. Only local organized rides I'm familiar with are Ride Around the Bear, and Breathless Agony. No shortage of climbing around here ;).
Anybody know if they climb up from the Beaumont side or the Yucaipa side?
Doesn't say on the site. Just that you can go back via San Timoteo, or directly back to the park, which leads me to believe they go up the Yucaipa side, and the out and back is the half-metric with the loop back through San Timoteo being the full metric.

Solvang is a really cute little town but your wife could hang in Palm Springs at the SPA while you're riding this one!! Although, I did read somewhere that she actually rides... why don't you talk her into riding too????

No the spa would be her thing. She rides, but only short distances with no hills or cars. But you say Palm Springs huh? That may just work.;)

yup... correct me if I'm wrong Cali, but I think Palm Springs is about 20-30 minutes east at most :p
That would be much better 'cause only a few people will make it up to Solvang but many of us can be talked into redlands... so you'll get to meet more peeps!!!

That's what I figured. Likely won't be making it out for that one though.
That's the weekend after my last mtn. bike race of the season, so I'll either be taking an off-season break for a few weeks, or jumping right into CX racing. In which case there's a cross race the following day. Probably not a good idea to do a longish climbing ride the day before a race...
Then there's that whole aversion to paying $30 to ride the same roads I ride every weekend ;).
Speaking of which, a question for you all.
At the risk of starting a flame-war, is there a consensus pro or con on locals "poaching" organized rides? My take on that is: if you're not utilizing any of the support provided by the ride organizers, i.e., no stopping at any of the sag stops and trying to scam free food & drink, then there's no reason not to be out on the same route.
In the past I've ridden the Ride Around the Bear route, with a small group of locals, on the day of the event. We simply skipped by all the sag stops, filled our water bottles at convenience stores or campgrounds on the route, and carried or stopped and bought any food we consumed. Just like as if it was a self-supported training ride.
I know of locals who do the same thing during Breathless Agony, though I've not done so.
Is this bad form? Are we earning bad "ride karma"? ;)

NO PIRATING! UGH!
See...I told you she'd have something to say! :p
I take it this topic has come up before?
Though, in this case, I'd quibble with the term "pirating".
"Pirate" would seem, to me, to infer the taking of something that is not one's own by force, or perhaps deception.
If one were to scam, or attempt to scam, free food/drink/support from the ride organizers that'd be pirating. Simply riding the roads one would be likely to ride anyway doesn't seem like pirating to me.
Notice I said "locals". If I lived 50 miles away and just *happened* to gather up a bunch of buddies and drive all the way out to Redlands, on that particular day, to ride the same route, then yeah, that'd be pretty shady. I haven't done enough organized "fun" rides to know if this is common practice, but I can see how that would get under the skin of organizers and paying riders.
However, it's my contention that locals, providing they're not utilizing the ride-support, should be given the benefit of the doubt. I mean, should we *avoid* that route on that day, simply because we haven't signed up with the out-of-town club's organized ride ride on our local roads? Speaking of which, it does seem kinda odd that none of the big organized rides around here (Breathless Agony, Ride Around the Bear, etc.) are put on by locals. Wonder why that is.
What if I didn't even know about the ride, and just happened to be out on Oak Glen Road that day (not entirely unlikely given the time of year and the fact that I ride Oak Glen somewhat frequently during the fall). Would I still be "pirating"?

uhm.... maybe the locals can't handle all the permits...and getting food... etc... one of the WORST run rides i did was the redlands savage hill challenge.... done by the locals.... i'll take breathless agony and OCW anyday!
are you scamming the route? sure just riding up or down oak glen is one thing... but are your pirating their whole route? that someone took the time to scope out and check construction, etc?
whatever... i'm sick of arguing it... you know it's wrong.... but do what you will......

I didn't do the Savage Hill Challenge. What was so bad about it? (Apart from suffering up Smiley Blvd. that is.) One of my teammates did it. I don't remember her complaining about it, except that she probably shouldn't have done it the day before a NORBA Nat'l.
Just to clarify, as I stated earlier, on the off chance I'm on the road-bike that day I'll most likely be doing the usual Saturday morning group-ride which doesn't normally go anywhere near Oak Glen. I won't be "scamming the route".
As for "scamming the route", there are only a few reasonable options for riding Oak Glen to Redlands and back, the most popular route in that direction may well coincide with the organized ride's route. FWIW, I usually ride it from the Beaumont side, which doesn't sound like it's the same route. Though it very well could be the same route in the opposite direction...
Sorry if I came across as argumentative. I was mostly just posing hypotheticals for the sake of discussion. I haven't done many organized, non-competitive rides, and I was curious what the reaction of riders would be if they encountered locals on the route sans ride numbers.
I knew it might be a hot-button issue for some, but I didn't think I was being particularly confrontational about it...
It is a popular route though, and chances are there will be locals out on the road, who may or may not know about the organized ride, so don't write them all off as "pirates". There will most likely be locals paying to ride it as well. You'll likely see at least a few yellow jerseys with palm trees on them. That's the local recreational riding club. I'm not a member, but I know a few of them, and most of the ones I've met are pretty cool. Pirates and otherwise ;).

no reason you can't drive there the morning of.... we drive to ALL our rides the morning of! (which almost always means getting up in the middle of the night! but hey..... i like organized rides!)
I was emailing back and forth with the organizer last night and he was really nice. This ride is a fundraiser for Paramount Racing Team and they would love to see a good turnout. Registration is capped at 300 riders and he said that they are giving away goodie bags that morning including- water bottle, goo, Power Bar, energy drink.
So come on...go register!! :D
