I woke up this morning, did my normal thing I do before a race. Check the bike, make sure everything is packed and ready to whoop some butt. Getting mentally ready to race. I left the house 7:45am, got to the back, go to jack n box, order #17 (always get this race day). I get on the freeway at 8:06, I need to be at registration by 10am, ride 15-20minutes to the remote starting line and launch at 11:16 (thats the plan).

I get to the base of Big Bear @ 9:15 and WHATS THIS.....the road is FREAKING CLOSED I know there's a back way up but I don't know how long I have to follow the 10 to find it, the mountian is huge. 9:30 on the 10 and don't see anything close to going up the back.... F**K!!!!!!! Pissed off that I trained my ass for this race and I can't even make it cuz they closed the main road and it wasn't listed on thier damn site BASTARD. I started thinking of what I can do if I go home, maybe go fishing, maybe go ride some boring trail near my house.......I think to myself, F it I'm gonna do GMR and on my MTB with fat knobby tires. God I wish I knew more of what I was getting in to. I take the 10 west to 71 north to 210 West, exit Azuza Ave. I havn't been up there in yrs and there's alot of new homes up there. I get to the base and ask the Park Ranger at to the info booth where can I park, she pointed up a bit. I pull up and see a roadie taking a break. I ask him (Jeff) about where to park and some directions of where to go on the Mountian. He said to take it up, R on East Fork, L at Glendora ridge Rd and that goes to down town Mt Baldy.

I'm like OK, doesn't seem THAT bad. Here's the pics, self explanitory!!!
32 miles to Down town, 95% of that was climbing from the base which about 730ft above sea level.

You did our loop....up 39 to East Fork, up little GMR to the village! Nice photos...I recognize every single shot of your's....
Actually, since you were on your mtb you could have taken one of the fire roads down to the bottom...:D

On your MTB?!

Nice pics! So you were registered for an organized ride and the road leading up was closed? That really sucks.

yah, I'm not sure how many other racers missed the race cuz of the road closure. I didn't have the time or directions for the back way up. And even if I did make it up in time the back way, I would have been in a rush to do everything and ride the 3-4 miles to the remote starting line. My mental game would have been jacked up and prolly would have blew up early in the race.

Oh well......I did one of my personal goals by climbing up GMR. Now I have to go back and take my roadie this time. I didn't know ANYTHING and was climbing blindly, crank my 50oz blatter a lil before hitting the 4500ft sign and just had my gatoraid bottle left. I inhaled a bacon cheese burger and 2 iced teas from the resturant. I needed it. i wish I could have mustered the energy to get to the ski lifts but I was beat, I NEVER climbed so much in my LIFE. But I had a great time and held a good pace, 8mpg climbing til I got to Glendora Ridge Rd, then it dropped to 6mph climbing. I wish i could have gone faster on the DH, knobby tires are SLOW on decents.

I thought of taking one of the fire roads up to a small peak, but it looked steeper then the road I was already climbing so I didn't want to try. Funny to see all the signs up there with bullet holes in them.
