Mountain Biking - The new bike is done!!! Pic

Just finished it. 2003 Explosif frame, XTR components, Rolf wheels. I've only ridden it in a parking lot and an icy dirt road so far...but it feels good :)

Obviously can't give a review of the crankset now...but they sure do look nice. I didn't put a whole lot of power to them in the parking lot with my khakis and office shoes on. lol

Fork is a '02 Black Elite Air 80mm. Got it on closeout pretty damn cheap :) It seems pretty comparible to a Duke as far as weight and stiffness...not many bumps in the parking lot though :(

Total was around $1600. Viva la Ebay! I did everything but adjust the shifting and the shop guy said it would have cost about 3.5k retail...The only parts I paid retail on were the pedals and notubes kit.

It's my second WTB for what it's worth :) They're like couches...I suppose everyone is different as far as what is comfortable though.

By the way...anyone recommend a good seatpost with setback? I've got a 5 dollar special on it now. It weighs a ton and my seat angle kept sliding around. Damn thing won't stay tight.

Be sure to give an update on how the notube kit works. Are your wheels tubeless or did you convert?

Wheels are just standard rims - not tubeless.

I've been riding the notubes for a while now. Can't recommend them enough. It's almost like the difference between clinchers and tubulars on the road...they just feel different (better IMHO). They save a bunch of weight where you can actually feel it and you get a little traction advantage with the lower PSI...or you can run them as high as you want for lower rolling resistance.

The sealent is awesome, too. It has zero problems sealing thorns and stuff instantly. Unless you tear your sidewall or something it's about impossible to flat.

Now that is one nice bike. I love than blue color. I wanted to buy an 02' explosif but there wasn't a dealer close buy and it was a little more than I wanted to spend. Great bike can't wait to hear how it rides.

One of them fell off :) I feel like a litterbug, but I have no idea where or when it happened. I just took the rest of them off to match...I'm too cheap to buy more :)

On the subject of seatposts. The best out there is Thomson Elite, and I know they make one with a lay-back. The two bolt clamping mechanism is so easy to micro adjust for angle, and hold the seat rails very securely. I'll never go back to a single bolt clamp. I kept stripping those and was constantly fighting them. I got a Thomson, and I now have them on all my bikes!

Btw, would someone mind explaining what the "notube" is? I haven't heard of that. Are they kind of like in-between regular tubed and tubeless tires?

It's a system to convert regular wheels (rims) into tubeless wheels. You can also run standard tires without tubes. Right now I have some Python Airlights installed...so I'm running tube wheels and tube tires with no tube.

It's basically just a rubber rim strip that goes in place of a normal rim strip. There is a hole and valve on them to pump your tires up.

I'm starting to lean towards a Thomson, but that may mean a longer stem. I have a 110 on it now, so I don't know; I don't want to mess up the geometry.

About the layback Thomsons...I just don't like the looks of them. I used to have a layback on my Haro BMX back in the 80's. lol

Sweet bike........I'd love to build up a bike of my own sometime in the future. As of now, though, I have nowhere near the required skill to do so.

I also got the thomson, and when we ride the downieville downhill, all my friends always gotta stop to retighten their seats and I keep rollin.
