I am working out a ride from Fullerton to Oceanside, along the eastern side of the Santa Ana mountians; through Corona and Temecula. A critical thread of this route is riding Temescal Canyon (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=corona,+ca&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=33.812956,-117.504787&spn=0.073595,0.195007&iwloc=A) from Corona to Temecula. Has anyone ridden Temescal Canyon? Is it a good road for cycling or one you would never ride again?

I've ridden Temescal Canyon from Cajalco to Lake Street in Lake Elsinore... its not bad but does have a lot of gravel trucks on the weekdays. You'll pass Tom's farms which is a great place for a rest stop/lunch (shade/food/etc.) there is also a little liquor/deli thing just a bit south of Cajalco. It is pretty lightly traveled on the weekends so not a big issue w/cars etc.

Let us know when you finish the route!

Looks like that's your only way. Here's a route sheet (http://sandiegocenturyriders.com/db3/00234/sandiegocenturyriders.com/_download/DeLuzCenturyrev0.pdf) that you can use from about mile 57 on, since it's an out and back from south of Oceanside via Temecula.

Could this be a potential group ride?

Isn't that road quite steep in sections? I remember going up there on a club tom farms ride and it beening quite steep (maybe it was rimpau?)

Thanks for the route sheet. I've been working from the LA Wheelmen's Turkey Trot Tour and the 2006 RAAM prelude to first timestation route sheets. I have all the pieces, in three route sheets, but they are all going the opposite direction. I just need to reverse and stitch them together.

Here are the backwards routesheets:

Oceanside to Temecula (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=8193)
Turkey Trot Tour - Day 3 (68 mi) (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=8110)
Fullerton To Featherly Park (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=8194)

Could this be a potential group ride?

I'll keep you informed about my plans, and post my route sheet here. As for making it a group ride I'll leave that up to this mob.

My intention is to ride from Fullerton to Oceanside, then take the Metrolink back to Fullertin. Metrolink runs weekend service to Orange County and the Inland Empire, any Metrolink Station on the Inland Empire route would be good starting point.

I rode half of the Hemet double century two years ago. A part of the ride went from Cajalco to Railroad Canyon in Lake Elsinore. Parts of the ride on Temescal Canyon can get a little bumpy, but still not as bad as Airport Road in the Tour de Palm Springs. That was the worst road I have ever ridden.

As far as steepness, Temescal Canyon is not too bad. There's a part coming into Tom's Farms that is tough because it looks like you're on a flat, when in reality you're climbing. The first couple of miles on Lake Street are the same. It's weird.

Airport was bad....but I think the worst was dropping down at high speed to the Imperial County line during the Borrego to the Salton Sea ride....I thought my teeth were going to fall out...

That route sheet has you going the right direction without trying to run the route backwards, and will put you out on Pacific street in Oceanside. Just tie into it at either mile 52 or mile 57, there's a regroup right after passing under the 15.

temescal canyon isn't steep (cajalco is if you're going east/west); TC pretty much follows 15, switching sides here and there... not the best road but not bad either (its part of the Hemet century as well)

My parents live in Murrieta. I ride to their house from LB on ocassion and take Ontario in Corona to Temescal Canyon down into Lake Elsinore. The road was pretty bad a few years ago with a lot of construction.

I rode there in August and Temescal Canyon is fine. Not much of a shoulder in places but not too much traffic on Sundays. One bit of a climb approaching Lake Elsinore but generally it's the wind that's bad.

I've finished off the route and loaded it into RouteSlip. RouteSlip says that the route is 103 miles with 3782 feet of climbing. There are a couple of short steep climbs, but I don't think they are as bad as Torry Pines. Here is the link to the route slip:

http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=8408

The closest train station is North Main Corona (http://www.metrolinktrains.com/lines/line_ieoc/stations/station_north_main_corona.php). From that station the route is 79 miles. There are two Metrolink Inland Empire (http://www.metrolinktrains.com/dds/pdf_schedule.php?schedule_id=20009) trains leaving Oceanside in the afternoon, one at 2:50 PM and another at 4:30 PM. Catching the train shouldn't be an issue.

looks like a pretty good route... the ride through Fallbrook will be pretty w/lots of options to stop for 'stuff' if necessary... when did you say you were going to do this ride???

Is anyone up for this ride tomorrow, Thursday, 28 December 2006?

Attached is a route slip (including an estimated schedule) and a spreadsheet of train schedules from Oceanside. I would target leaving Tom's Farm at 9:30 AM. How you get to Tom's Farm is up to you. The train schedules include distances to Tom's Farm from must of the nearby train stations.
