Just before a tour this summer I ran over a man hole cover with a 8 to 10 inch drop during a club ride.
We were on our Co Motion Mocha which had Velocity Deep V's - I had two flats a bent rear rim. Luckily, for me I had another new set of the same wheels at home from another project. So now that fall is begining to set in I see that I will need to re-build the rear wheel. Today I bought 2 new Mavic 36 hole
x517's on ebay for the incredible price of $20. Are these worth building up for a tandem or do I save them for another project? It was my lucky day because I also got a new set of Dia Compe 287 tandem levers for $10.00. The limiting factor on the Velocity's is that for the Schwalbe Pluses that I run I am probably linited to to a 26X1.35 and with the Mavics I can run atleast 26X1.5. Any opinions on the rims would be appreciated.

A 517 is one of the better lightweight rims that I use on the solo's. I do not think it will take the knocks that a Tandem will give them unless you are on perfect tarmac. I would look at the Freeride quality rims in Mavic such as the 321 to give enough strength for a Tandem
