Bicycle Mechanics - SRAM chain ?

I just got a new SRAM chain with the Gold link connector. I can't really tell from the directions, do I need a new connector every time I take the chain apart or can I use the same one again? It's a Shimano 9 speed.

you reuse the master link.

same deal with the silver link?

yeah - the silver link is for 6/7/8 speed chains, the gold one for 9 speed chains. Other than the width they're the same thing.

I'm thankful for the colour difference too - it's very hard to tell the difference between the two widths visually.

How should one resize the chain when first installing it?? Do you take out links with a normal chain tool somewhere further along the chain, then fasten the master links?

I used to have an SRAM chain with the master link, but destroyed the pins connecting it to the rest of the chain when trying to shorten it. Now I just avoid quick-release chains.

I usually shorten the new chain to match the length of the old one. Using a standard chain tool, remove the links from an end. Then intall and reconnect the chain using the master link. You wouldn't need to reinstall links, and only need one master link per chain.
